Shop, I b Schoolboy Football Shows Increase By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer Texas schoolboy football is growing so fast it can’t keep up with itself. Right in the middle of the current football season, it was announced that there would be 10 more schools in the Interscholastic League next season. That was the count as of the present. By next fall there prob ably will be more. ANYWAY, Texas schoolboy football will show a new high in COACH NORTON’S PANCAKE HOUSE 35 Varieties of finest pancakes, aged heavy KC steaks, shrimp, and other fine foods. Daily .... The increase of 10 over this year comes in the upper class es where new schools are being built faster than consolidations are removing some of the smaller schools. Once the larger schools estab lished dynasties. That was when there was only one high school in cities the size of Waco, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, Odessa, Austin, et al. BACK WHEN Waco was the power of the League in the twen ties, it was common talk: “Well, why shouldn’t they; a city of 90,- 000 with only one high school.” But more high schools started springing up. Amarillo was the power of Texas in the late thirties and in the forties. But more high schools were established in Ama rillo and it divided the material. IT WAS the same at Wichita Falls, which started a slump as soon as more than one high school started operating there. Wich ita Falls failed to win its district title last year. This season it is rather lightly regarded in the state race. Abilene ran up the national win ning streak in the middle fifties. But another high school was built there. Now Abilene will do well to win its district championship. PERHAPS this is the best way to solve the problem of domina tion. Thinking back to the days when the little towns had to com pete with the cities that had only one high school, it never occurred to anybody that there could be any other way for equal competition than to classify the schools accord ing to size. But the thing has tak en care of itself. i„, Dumas probably will control Class AAA until another high school is built there.
