FIRST MEETING FRIDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 4, GAMES AREA, M.S.C. Four” in a battle that can well shape the entire season. This one always figures strongly in where the championship is to go. THE TEXAS Christian-Arkan- sas clash in the Ozarks headlines a full and important schedule of two conference games and four intersectional tests that could give the Southwest national prominence. Intersectionally, Rice, buoyed by its 21-12 victory over Louisi ana State, rolls against mighty Penn State at University Park, Pa.; Baylor, which walloped Houston 27-0 in its opener, goes out to Portland to take on Ore gon State, and Southern Method ist, which bowed to Michigan 27- •16 but was pleased with a second half comeback, gets Air Force Academy in the Cotton Bowl. IN THESE three games the conference representatives will be playing outfits that are unbeaten and untied in two tests thus far. Air Force may be the toughest of the group. The Fly Boys whipped Washington and crushed Colo rado State. TEXAS, the defending cham pion and rated No. 3 in the na tion, stays at home to entertain Oklahoma State. It will be the first test from Oklahomans since the Longhorns play Oklahoma at Dallas next week in the big one. Oklahoma State never has beat en Texas and doesn’t appear cap able of making it very interesting this time. But the game will fur nish a comparison between Texas and Arkansas, another of the Big Four. Arkansas beat the Sooner Aggies 21-0 in opening the sea son. RICE, the fourth member of the Big Four, has its work cut out for it against a Penn State team that features the blistering aerial maneuvers of Pete Liske. The Owls might match him in brilliance with their Walt, Me- BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES One day 3* per word 2d per word each additional day Minimum charsre—40d imum charsre- DEADLINE 4 p.m. day before publication ‘ 1 Displa Classified Display 80d per column inch each insertion PHONE VI 6-6416 CHILD CARE Child care on Foch, nice play area, VI 6-7370. 140t8 Children ages. Arkansas is favored to beat Texas Christian despite its loss last week to Missouri while the Christians were downing Florida State 13-0. But it ought to be a great battle with the No. 1 and No. 2 conference rushers — Jim Lindsey of Arkansas and Tommy Crutcher of Texas Christian—in a thunderous duel. SOUTHERN METHODIST, with its new star Danny Thomas, a passer and kicker of sensation al proportions, is hopeful against Air Force. But no one expects the Methodists to halt Terry Isaacson, who is a fine passer and runner and a brilliant quar terback. Baylor and Oregon State are due to wage an aerial duel and if so the Bears ought to have as good a chance as anybody with its Don Trull. :g Ags Face 1st SWC Foi One year and 19 seconds ago, the Texas Tech Red Raiders were preparing to kickoff to A&M fol lowing a field goal that gave them a 3-0 lead and what seemed to be a rousing upset victory. But 19 seconds and 100 yards later, the Aggies marched off the field with an unbelievable 7-3 win. Danny Mcllhany took that kick off and skittered and scampered from end zone to end zone to snatch the decision away from Tech, breaking their back and ruining their season. THIS SAME speedster will open at halfback Saturday night against Tech in Lubbock holding the No. 1 spot on the Raiders’ Most Unpop ular list. If the Aggies win the toss, Mc llhany most likely will be the choice to receive the 7:30 p.m. opening kickoff. Coach Hank Foldberg’s squad will be hoping that history does repeat itself. The Cadets are a slim one touchdown favorite in its confer ence opener. Tech started SWC play last Saturday with a 49-7 loss to Texas. A&M stands 0-2 for the season while the Raiders are 1-1. TECH COACH J. T. King has a much improved crew with a bona fide all-America candidate in end David Parks and a highly touted halfback in Donny Anderson. Parks was all-SWC last year while leading the conference in pass receptions and doing the kicking chores for Tech. Anderson is just a sophomore but has drawn high compliments from Aggie scout Craig Randall. Randall calls the Stinnett flash the best runner the Cadets will face. This includes Paul Warfield of Ohio State and Joe Labruzzo of LSU.
