Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, September 5, 19f>3 THE BATTALION A&M Consolidated Prepares For Season Opener Friday Coach Edsel Jones has no where to go but up with his A&M Con solidated Tigers this season. Picked to finish last in District 19-AA, Consolidated returns only six lettermen and two seniors. The Tigers have a light squad with no member weighing over 190 pounds and have a serious depth problem. The lettermen are: Darrell Gos sett, 185, Jr.; J. Pewthers, 170, Sr.; Carl Gough, 160, Jr.; Walter Var- vel, 160, Jr.; Frank Litterst, 180, Sr.; David Parsons, 190, Jr. THE TIGERS GAINED a 5-5 record last year but trouble will be had matching that in ’63. Con solidated lacks speed, depth, ex perience and a good punter. Bright spots should be the 'run ning of Litterst and Parsons, the line play of Pewthers and Gossett and the passing of Varvel. District opposition includes state “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars Sales—Parts—Service “We Service All Foreign Cars” 1422 Texas Ave. TA 2-4517 AA runner-up Rockdale, Caldwell, Hearne, Navasota and Cameron. Rockdale is expected to repeat as district champs with Caldwell giv en a nod as darkhorse. CONSOLIDATED opens its sea son play against Columbus of Dis trict 21-AA at Columbus Friday night. Coach Jones calls Colum bus a “real fine team that will be hax - d to beat.” To make matters worse, the Tig ers will be going into the game with their two top runners injured. Parsons has a bad knee and Litterst has an injured ankle. STARTING LINEUP for Consol idated will be: Ends—Russell Hanna and Ricky Carlton Guards—Miller and Bill White Tackles—Gossett and Larry God frey Center—Gough WB—Timmy Wolters FB—Russ Harvell HB—Peter Fagan TB—Vaiwel The Tigers run from a split-T with an unbalanced line. Jones is assisted by Jack Church- hill and Lawrence Holacek. The workouts This is the year of the super lative in the Southwest Conference. It seems like every player, every coach and every team is being tabbed by somebody as “the great est since . . .” or “the greatest ever” or “fastest back, heaviest line.” And the most fearsome thought in each camp is that most of the super adjectives are true. Four schools —Texas, Arkansas, Rice and TCU —have been consistently picked for the Top 20 in pre-season polls. Texas has been chaided No. 1 in two polls and Arkansas has been given the top spot in yet another poll. “Improved” is the most descrip tive comment that can be applied to every team. No team lacks a performer of all-conference dimen sions and all teams have strength f in some spot that precludes any complete rebuilding chore. Oilers Release Former Aggie Linebacker Jerry Hopkins, all-conference center for the 1962 Aggies, was re leased Monday by the Houston Oilers. Hopkins has been working out at the Linebackers spot for the American Football League team and had drawn praise on several occasions. He was released along with five other players in order for the Oilers to meet the AFL maximum of 33 players on the roster. The three-year letterman from A&M was contacted by the Den ver Bronchos of the AFL but no definite word was given about whether or not the Denver team would sign Hopkins. Field. Coach Foldberg is using r>: practice to avoid the heat of a: noon workouts. Foldberg pointed out that three of U) first four games are under lights. All practices are currently o| to the public. For the enlighi ment of Aggie fans who watch drills, Maroon jerseys are won first team players, white sect: blue, green, red and orange. sh: For Wednesday’s workout, jur letterman Mike Kohlman was ed from his halfback position center. Ray Kubala was the letterman at center while Kohlra was one of three fullbacks winni letters last year.
