Page 2 THE BATTALION College Station, Texas Thursday, March 21, 1963 CADET SLOUCH bv Jim Earle Bulletin Board Maybe It’s Not Too Late We found it heartening- to hear that the Student Senate plans a study of the closing of the college museum, but we hope it isn’t too late. We also wonder just what can be done. Already the museum is closed, with exhibits simply set ting where they were. Already the herbarium has been moved to the Plant Sciences Building and offices in the museum have beeil closed. And the efforts and recommendations of a faculty-staff museum committee have failed to keep the museum’s doors open. The problem appears to be clear and simple—$25,000 a year is needed to operate the museum, but the money is not available. This makes it appear that the only real solution would be the raising of $25,000 annually. Needless to say, this will not be an easy task. The museum committee recommended that the museum “be maintained and expanded” after a months-long study that began last winter. Unfortunately this group has been the only campus faction to make an attempt to save the museum after news of the upcoming closing was released last fall. So now the issue has been revived, but efforts toward a working settlement will meet with much more difficulty. We would agree with the committee that “more steps need to be taken” ... we just hope it isn’t too late. . . . I’ll be glad when this karate craze is over!’’ Hometown Clubs Grayson County club will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Cushion Room of the YMCA Building. How many times within the last few weeks have graduating seniors been told that they must take the Graduate Record Exam ? This misconception has risen from the cleverly worded memo randum issued by Dean of In struction W. J. Graff’s office. Although seniors will not be required to take the test this year—and I for one am not go ing to take the day-long quiz— it will be a graduation require ment effective next year. The objections most seniors have to the exam is not to taking the test, but why hasn’t the ad ministration, or the profs, or who ever is behind this thing, just come right out and said it is re quired or it isn’t required. Many seniors are not planning to take the GRE because of this sneaky approach. You would think after all the confusion last year, and the ill- will such announcements have caused, that the powers that be would play it straight. Consider the announcement running in the official notices Section of The Batt’s classifieds: “The seniors graduating on May 25, will register March 19- 25 inclusive, for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).” Notice that this doesn’t say seniors must take it. But the im plication is certainly there. The memo from Dean Graff uses the phrase “are expected” to imply that attendance is mandatory. Now a few short takes. Schuli 1. Quote of the week — Hank Foldberg on television Tuesday night after The Batt broke the story of the Rogers affair: “I’m surprised.” The KBTX-TY news crew is to be congratulated on some fine reporting and getting an inter view before the coach left town again. Foldberg never did say yea or nay on any of the issues. 2. El Teleg-rafo, newspaper in Guayaquil, Ecuador, carried pic- j tures of the now infamous Aggie- !' UT fight in Austin during Feb ruary. I couldn’t tell what they said about it, but the pictures were clear enough. Sound Off Editor, The Battalion: There has been much contro versy recently as to who actually has the record in regard to the “50-mile hike” from here to Huntsville. It would seem that the only two outfits in school able to secure anyone from their ranks man enough to even make the trip are G-3 and 1-3. Each trek was made under different conditions, so nothing concrete can really be determined. In view of this situation, two “undrilled” non-regs from Wal ton Hall are hereby making the following open challenge: Let any and all aspirants of this record make the same trip at the same time under the same conditions to settle this issue. Loupot has offered an engraved plaque to the winner. A referee car will follow the leader from North Gate to Sadler’s Drug Store in Huntsville starting at 4 a.m. this Saturday. Anyone who wishes to accept this challenge should contact Bob Hood, D-3 Walton. We would like to work out the rules in detail.
