Zoo Di rector Arthur Watson gave Jack his chance after Khrush chev said that one isn’t able to tell if abstract painting is drawn by a man or “smeared by the tail of a donkey.” Watson plans more tail paintings for Jack after the sum mer fly season returns. (AP Wirephoto) (Special to The Battalion) St. Louis, Mo.—The proficiency tests in foreign languages required of most PhD candidates in the United States have become “a mere gesture, having little significance as a measure of true learning,” according to Dr. Saul Rosenzweig, professor of psychology and med- cal psychology at Washington Uni versity. In a survey of the use made of foreign languages since gradua tion among several hundred psy chologists receiving degrees be tween 1948 and 1952, Rosenzweig discovered that almost two-thirds of the degree-holders had not read a single article or book in the supposedly learned language in the seven or eight, years since gradua tion. About 70 per cent had made no oral use of the language. In most graduate schools read ing examinations are required in two foreign languages, most often French and German. Rosenzweig suggested that the stipulation be changed to require a mastery of a single language, with deminstrat- ed competence in speaking and writing as well as reading. He said that the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Washington University has now begun to per mit students to present a compre hensive knowledge of one language as an option to a reading knowl edge of two languages, but that to his knowledge this practice is fol lowed in only an occasional, univer sity in other parts of the countiy. ABOUT 83 per cent of the 681 respondents favored elimination or revision of the foreign language requirement, thus showing the gen eral disrepute in which the super ficial reading knowledge of a lan guage now required is held. Rosenz weig said that although “lip serv ice” is paid to knowledge of a foreign language, in reality the PhD candidate often needs only to pass a brief reading examination. In some schools an option, such as knowledge of some special re search technique, is offered in lieu of one language but no contribu tion is made by such a substitute toward a more meaningful mastery of the remaining language.
