(Photo by Ben Wolfe) Ags High In Stats ’By The Associated Press Gary Poage of Rice ran a pass interception back 68 yards against Texas Christian and Texas’ Eldon Moritz kicked a 39-yard field goal against Texas A&M for season highs in Southwest Conference football last week. One team high was set when Texas Christian averaged 47.8 yards in punting against Rice. Those were the only new marks last week. Previously set were the following: Most rushing plays—Coolidge Hunt, Texas Tech, 27, against Texas Christian and Southern Methodist. Longest run from scrimmage— 80 yards by Jim Saxton, Texas, against Southern Methodist. Most yards rushing—Saxton 173, against Southern Methodist. Most passes attempted — Jerry Rhome, Southern Methodist, 26, against Texas A&M. The team highs are as follows: Most first downs—A&M, 27 against Trinity. Most rush plays—Texas, 75 against Arkansas. Most yards gained rushing, Tex as, 391 against Tech. Most passes attempted, Baylor, 35 against Texas. Most passes completed—SMU, 20 against A&M. Most yards gained passing SMU, 176 against A&M. Most yards total offense—Texas 548 against Tech. Most punts, Rice, 11 against Louisiana State and A&M, 11, against LSU. Most pass interceptions—A&M, 4 against Trinity and Arkansas. Best punt return average—SMU, 25.0 3 for 75 against Air Force. Best kickoff return average— A&M, 27.3 3 for 85 against SMU. Most points scored—A&M, 55 against Trinity. Leaders in Southwest Conference ball-carrying, passing and total of fense withstood futile challenges last week and it now appears all three will retain their leadership. James Saxton of Texas virtually clinched the rushing title with a total of 846 yards, the highest achieved by a SWC ball carrier since Jim Swink rushed for 1,283 in 1955. Saxton’s total betters his own school record of 841, fashioned by Byron Townsend in 1950. Jerry Rhome of SMU held on to the forward pass leadership and is within eight completions of the 1960 champion. Sonny Gibbs of TCU appears out of reach by any total offense challenger. Gibbs has passed for 871 yards and has rushed for 163 for a total of 1,034 yards total offense. Rhome and Gibbs will oppose each other in one of the season finales at Fort Worth this week. This will also be the occasion for TCU’s fine sophomore fullback, Tommy Crutcher, to bid for run ner-up honors in ball-carrying. Crutcher lost third place last week to Lance Alworth of Arkan sas, who had his biggest gain of the year against Texas Tech. But he needs only 18 yards to move ahead of both Alworth and Jerry Cook of Texas, who is currently in second place with 527 yards. Although Alworth romped for 97 yards against Tech, ball-carry ing honors for the week belonged to Quarterback Randy Kerbow of Rice who gained 137 yards against TCU in 14 carries. He also com- UNBECOMING CONDUCT FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (A>)—Ari- zon State College coach Max Spils- bury, still laughs about an incident in a football game last year. When an official called a penalty against his team and tossed his red marker on the ground, tackle Alex Amado picked it up and blew his nose. Did the official get mad? “Sure,” relates Spilsbury, “but he didn’t know what kind of penalty to call. So he didn’t call one. pleted all four of his passes for 49 yards and emerged with a total offense of 186 yards on 18 plays for the day. Attempting fewer passes than any other of the five SWC lead ers, Mike Gotten of Texas has com pleted more for touchdowns (7) and has a slight lead over Rhome in passing proficiency. Texas created a new rushing record of 285.8 yards per game and came up with the second best total offense in modern history with an average of 383.1 per game. The Longhorns also finished with the best total defense mark for the year, reclaiming that sta tus from Arkansas in the final game with A&M. Arkansas ranks second in rush ing and total defense per game and leads in defense against pass es. The Razorbacks are close be hind Baylor in the race for total offense runner-up honors and is second to Texas in rushing. Saxton also has the season’s longest i'un from scrimmage ati( most yards rushing in a single game, both at the expense of SMU, l ■ in Kifklffiri k Ibiiin ^ ^ “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars Sales—Parts—Service “We Service All Foreign Cars” : 1416 Texas Ave. TA 2-4517 I “Look!
