Doherty Petroleum Engineering Building to precede the interna tional conference on Modern Trends in Activation Analysis here Dec. 15-16. Laboratory sessions are sched uled at the activation analysis research laboratory, data process ing center and nuclear science cen ter during the ten-day course. Principal instructors for the first course will be George Leddi- cott, Oak Ridge National Labora tory; Dr. Derek Gibbons, United Kingdom Atomic Energy Author ity; Dr. Vincent P. Guinn, Shell Development Co., and Dr. Richard E. Wainerdi of the Department of Petroleum Engineering. The larger conference is ex pected to bring together nearly 150 scientists from throughout the world to discuss latest trends in chemical analysis through use of nuclear activation. Sponsoring the conference is the Activation Analysis Research Lab oratory in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the U.S. Atomic En ergy Commission’s Division of Isotopes Development. The science of activation anal ysis involves bombarding mate rials with nuclear particles and measuring the kind of radiation they give off. The radiation indi cates what materials are made of. Wainerdi, a member of the con ference organizing committee and head of the A&M Activation Anal ysis Research Lab, said, “Research in activation analysis is, at pres ent, following two main trends: radio-chemical separations meth ods and non-destructive instru mental methods.” Gibbons, conference chairman and associate head of the A&M research facility, said, “The bring ing together of internationally recognized leaders in the field at an international conference will permit extensive discussion of these two modern approaches so they can be contrasted and com pared to the mutual advantage of each.” The technique of activation an alysis was discovered by Baron Von Hevesy in 1936. Between that time and 1957, approximately 250 papers were published con cerning activatiop analysis. In the period 1957 to 1960, more than 250 additional papers have been published, indicating the increas ing interest in the field. The last international confer ence devoted solely to activation analysis was a symposium held by the International Atomic En ergy Agency in Vienna in 1959. Several lectures were devoted to the technique at a conference on Uses of Radioactive Isotopes in the Physical Sciences and Industry held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1960.
