TA 2-0139 - TA 2-0130 By WILL GRIMSLEY Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK—Down in the cot ton and corn pone country, they’re wagering plantations on the Mis- sissippi-Louisiana State football game. The Ole Miss line looks big enough to move the Empire State Building and the Rebel backs run like the wind. LSU is just as deep and resourceful, but in the big game of the week the vote is Mississippi 20, LSU 8. Last week’s upsets jolted our fancy .800 record and we hit 35, lost 19 for .649. This week’s other picks: Michigan State 23, Minnesota 14: The Spartans are going to be beaten, but not. this week. The Gophers put too much in the Little Brown Jug. Colorado 14, Missouri 7: The Texas’ Ford Takes Over F ullback Spot AUSTIN OP)—The Texas Long horns call him “Thunderbird,” and at 5-feet-9 and 180 pounds he wouldn’t be considered a lot of fullback. But Couch Darrell Royal, with fullback Ray Poage probably out for the Southern Methodist game at Dallas Saturday, is planning to run Tommy “Thunderbird” Ford, a third Stringer, from the middle back position. Royal announced the shift of Ford during the week to back up second-string fullback John Allen Cook, who will be filling for Poage. Another sophomore, Derr ell Oli ver, may see action if he stops developing charleyhorses. Ford, ranking fifth in confer ence rushing, has an average of 6.3 yards with 44 carries and 278 yards. John Allen Cook has a 3.9 average with 70 yards in 18 carries. Buffaloes put another nail in the Big Eight championship. Alabama 25, Mississippi State 8: Coach Bear Bryant calls this his big one, so the Crimson Tide romps. Syracuse 18, Pittsburgh 14: Its’ too much to expect Pitt to pro duce two insph'ed performances in a row. Georgia Tech 20, Florida 6: The battle between the two Dodds. Bobby, Sr., has more ammunition. Texas 28, SMU 6: The Long horns are a berserk herd on a stampede. Notre Dame 14, Navy 8: The two teams trying to rebound from upsets. . The Irish have greater resiliency.
