(Bill) Turnei', music coordinator, has accepted a posi tion as head of the Department of Music at Stephen F. Austin Col lege, Nacogdoches, with the rank of professor, J. Wayne Stark, di rector of the Memorial Student Center, announced today. He will take over the post at Stephen F. Austin College Sept. 1, this year. Turner has been music coordi nator at A&M since 1944. He is director of the Singing Cadets, the Aggieland Orchestra, Memorial Student Center music activities and manager of Town Hall. He was director of music at Baytown, Texas, high school for four years. Gordon Gay of College Station look at some of the global points they will visit on a tour of the Holy Land and other areas. Gay has for 32 years been co-ordina tor of religious life and general secretary of the YMCA on the A&M campus. The Gays will leave June 2 and return on July 14. J. Gordon Gay, coordinator of Religious Life and general secre tary of the YMCA at A&M will leave soon on a tour of the Holy Land that will be the culmination of a lifelong dream. He will fly from New York June 2 and return on July 14. His wife, Emma, will make the jour ney with him. An anonymous group of former A&M students is making the tour possible by raising funds amount ing to $3,300. The drive is an ex pression of their appreciation of Gay’s services to Aggies over a period of 32 years. He is the oldest student YMCA secretary in point of service in the United States, having served in that capacity for 34 years. Tall, soft-spoken and obviously filled with the humility and inner- contentment of genuine faitih, Gay said the trip will mark a high point in his and his wife’s life. “I never thought we would have this chance. We are realizing a lifetime ambition,” he said. “It’s very gratifying to know that enough people think this much of us to make the tour possible.” The Gays will participate in the Arthur Smith Holy Land Tour. Smith, a professor, holds the Bap tist Chair of Bible at A&M. Touring the Holy Land area act ually is only part of the overall trip. In addition to visiting Le banon, the Gays will travel to Greece, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Scotland and England. Wyss is chairman, Department of Bacteriology, University of Texas. “Basic Biology of Microorgan isms,” will be the, subject of the lecture. Wyss, a native of Wisconsin, got his B.S. and Ph.D. from the Uni versity of Wisconsin majoring in bacteriology. He served as a re search bacteriologist for 4 years in industry before going to the University of Texas in 1945 as as sistant professor. He was pro moted to professor in 1948 and de partment chairman in 1959. His re search interests are in general bacteriology and microbial genet ics. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of the Amer ican Academy of Microbiology since the founding of that organ ization. He has been for many years a member of the council and council policy committee of the Society of American Bacteriolo gists. A. A. S. and Sigma Xi. Five Students Receive Grants National Defense Graduate Fel lowships from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare have been awarded to Bobby J. Bland of Bryan, Harold D. Bier of Clarendon, Bobby K. Robertson of Canyon, James O. Schreck of Houston and Albert Z. Harris of El Paso, all chemistry majors at A&M. The fellowships are for three years study toward the PhD de gree in chemistry. William Rex Clayton of Dallas, a senior, has been awarded a gift of $100 from the Hugh E. McLean Jr. Fund by an A&M Department of Chemistry faculty committee. The award will be used by Clay ton to continue his education to ward a master of science degree. Tommy R. Ellison of Dallas, a senior majoring in chemistry, has been named recipient of a National Science Foundation Fellowship for graduate work at Ohio State Uni versity. Ellison, along with Robert J. Copeland Jr. of Panola, recently were presented Merck Index Awards for outstanding achieve ment in chemical studies.
