Reduce Wheat Yield Said Due To Mosaic Virus Dr. Lee J. Ashworth, assistant professor in the A&M Department of Plant Physiology and Pathology, has reported that some of the re duced wheat yields this past sea son in the High Plains area is now considered to have been partly due to wheat streak mosaic virus dis ease. The virus was successfully transmitted from diseased wheat plants collected in Lipscomb coun ty by H. H. McKinney of the-U.S. Department of Agriculture. Ash worth also found diseased plants in Potter and Deaf Smith Coun ties. Ashworth said virus transmis sion studies show that the wheat streak virus is harbored by at least five native grass species. He said that a mite insect, so small it cannot be seen with the naked eye, is believed to be a car rier of the virus. The insect has been found on sand bur plants on the High Plains.
