Young, head of the A&M Department of Range and Forestry, will retire from teaching on August 31. Young has been at A&M since 1946 and is credited with develop ing some of the nation’s top de partments of range and forestry. During his 13 years at A&M, 240 students have graduated from the department and many hold impor tant positions throughout the na tion. Young is a native of Utah. He holds a bachelors degree from Utah State Agricultural College, an M.S. from Iowa State College, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota. He is a member of many professional organizations and the author of numerous techni cal and popular articles dealing with research in th? field of range and forestry. An honor award dinner was held In Dr. and Mrs. Young’s honor at the Triangle Restaurant on July 25. Friends and former students from many sections of Texas and the nation Were present fbr the oc casion. A. H. Walker, state agricultural leader for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and the first student to receive an M.S. degree at A&M in range management served as master of ceremonies. Bill Allred, head soil conserva tionist, Soil Conservation Service, Washington D. C. and a lifelong friend of Young, told how Young's leadership had been responsible for the organization of the American Society of Range Management. A&M Scientists Named to Society Two scientists conducting re search at A&M on amino sugars and organoboron compounds have been named to membership in the German Chemical Society. They are Dr. H. K. Zimmerman, associate professor of chemistry, and Dr. Hans Weidmann, post-doc toral research Fellow in the De partment of Chemistry. Results of their research here are now being published in two scientific journals in Germany. Dr. Weidmann, a graduate of the University of Mainz in Germany, is In this country on a Fellowship from the Welch Foundation.
