Wilcox Retires From Faculty Here INDIANAPOLIS (^—Mission ary work of the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) is being ex tended to a rugged jungle terri tory of Thailand near the Burmese border—to a tribe called the Ka rens. Thursday, July 30, 1959 BALTIMORE <A>)—The banana wagon was hitched to a small, Shetland pony at Bond and Fleet Streets. The small boy looked and looked, then asked the vender: “Say, mister. Will that* dog- bite?” PAGE 3 George Barton Wilcox, respect fully called “the grand old man of Texas education,” has retired from the faculty here to close a career in education that has spanned a half of a century. At the time of his retirement, he was a professor in the Department of Education and Psychology, a de partment he headed until going on modified service five years ago. During his 50 years in the field of education—10 years in public schools and 40 years at A&M, Wil cox rendered innumerable services to his profession. He was one of the leaders in the organization of the state’s teacher retirement pro gram, regarded by many educators as one of the finest in the nation. Wilcox was recognized early at A&M as an outstanding educator. In 1920 he helped organize the A&M Consolidated public school and was named the first principal of the school. In 1943 a Student Personnel Office was established and he became the first director of the office. And in 1944, when a man was needed to head up the newly-organized Department of Ed ucation and Psychology, he was se lected for the job. For many years Wilcox has tak en an active part in the affairs of the Texas State Teachers Assn, and headed the organization as pi’esident in 1939.
