Wool Judging Scenes such as this will be a familiar sight at the A&M stock barns tomorrow as high school FFA boys compete in the State FFA Judging Contests. A<%M Collegiate FFA chapter members will assist with the judg ing. The above judging took place at last year’s contests. Ranchers Learn AhoutConservation For the future rancher, A&M’s range management course offers a teaching program emphasizing fundamental and associate prob lems on ranch and livestock man agement from the standpoint of conservation, proper land usage and maximum livestock produc tion. The bachelor of science degree offered in range management pre pares a student for jobs with fed eral and state agencies, private in dustries and range operations. De partment officials estimate that five jobs are available for each range management graduate. Range management comes under the Department of Range and For estry, which also offers a two- year course of study in forestry, with provision for funds to help pay for a final degree in foresti’y in an accredited out-of-state school. Ag Teachers Find Training Planned Here Students interested in teaching vocational agriculture can find a home in the Department of Agri cultural Education where every step of their career is planned and supervised by staff members. Training is basically concerned with teaching vo-ag students how to work successfully with farm adults and youth as well. Cei-tain technical information plus the cor rect methods of instructing are necessary for a agriculture teach er. These things they learn as well as developing their leadership ability. In the department students are given opportunity to join collegi ate FFA work and to help analyze and solve problems that arise in rural areas. Some problems require research before the solution is apparent. Techniques of doing such are also emphasized. As a final step, the department helps graduates find good posi tions after completing classroom work. Plant Study, Beauty Part of Agriculture Opportunities for employment as floriculturists and landscape architects exist in teaching, exten sion and research. Floriculture is the branch of ag riculture concerned with the pro duction, distribution and market ing of ornamental plants. The curriculum is designed to provide preparation for the highly techni cal and specialized growing oper ations for florist and nursery crop production. College Station (Brazos ^ Texas g Engineering Flays Fig Hole In Two I jelds Modern mechanisWl farm ing, along with t\ie wide spread use of irrigation and the increasing need f ° r soil conservation, makes the role of the agricultural engineer greater than ever before. The agricultural engineer is trained in both fields. IBs exper ience in integrating the two qual ifies him to design, develop, or ganize and direct engineering- work in agriculture and closely allied fields. The four major phases covered in agricultural engineering are farm power and machinery, farm buildings and structures, farm electrification and soil and water conservation. Graduates in agricultural engi neering are prepared for servibe with colleges and the government in teaching, extension and research work; with government soil ero sion and control projects; manu facturers of farm machinery; ad vertising sales and design work; and engineering and soU ei’osion and control, irrigation and drain age work.
