The Battalion »/= College Station (Brazos CountyJ 9 Texas PAGE 8 Thursday, December 19,1957 Largest Single Factor Sleepy Drivers Cause Accidents Statistics have shown over a pei’iod of years that falling asleep at the wheel is the largest single cause of traffic accidents, account ing for 53 per cent of all fatal ac cidents and 49 per cent of the non- fatal type. Falling asleep at the wheel has accounted for several Aggie deaths. A great majority of Aggies who leave the campus Friday and Satur day will do some night driving. Some time during the trip, the driver will probably feel sleepiness creeping up on him. The best thing to do in such a case is to pull off the road and take a short nap or change drivers. To avoid falling asleep at the wheel and risking the uncertain results, the driver should keep these tips in mind. He should avoid heavy foods, great amounts of liquids and so called “antisleep” pills. Of course, liquor and other alcoholic beverages should never he taken while driv ing. Several light meals or snacks are better than one heavy meal when driving. Heavy, greasy meals are contributing factors to drowsiness. Consumption of liquids should be curtailed. Drinking great amounts of soup, beer or coffee will slow down kidney functions. Taking of drugs to stay awake is not advised. Such drugs will keep the driver awake, but at the same time slow down reaction time. Getting out of the car and stretching is also a good method to avoid sleepiness. At such stops the eyes can be rested by looking up and down, to the right and left. It is also advisable to massage the eyelids with your fingers. Even though another hour may be added to the trip by taking such precautionary measures, trained dx-ivers have proven by their safety records that by following them they can avoid accidents. Cars Killed More Than Wars Have Visions of friends, relatives and colorful lights ai’e filling Aggies’ heads as the Christmas holidays near. But it is a known fact that some of us may never see them. Accidents on the streets and highways killed 108 persons in Tex as during the Christmas holidays last yeai\ This year’s Christmas holiday forecast is 113 deaths— and traffic dui’ing this critical per iod is expected to be heavier than ever before. It is an interesting but dreadful fact that from 1900 to 1956, more people in America were killed in traffic accidents than wei’e killed in all the United States wars from 1775 to 1956. Traffic accidents kill some 40,- 000 Americans each year. Last year Texas, not helping this fig- ui’e, set an all-time recox’d of 2,611 I did not whistle at her. I whistled because the dress she is wearing looks like it was cleaned by _ CAMPUS CLEANERS killed, 111,000 injured and mox’e than $300 million loss. Fifty-eight per cent of the fatal accidents in Texas last year wei’e caused by excessive speeding, and driving under the influence of al cohol figured in 39 per cent. Local prosecutors, sheriffs and police chiefs have been urged to ci'ack down on l^hese two offenses in pax - - ticular dui’ing the holiday season. In 1956, the motor-vehicle deaths in Texas were over the average U. S. rate, 29.3 to 23.9. In mileage death rates, Texas was slightly un der the avei’age U. S. x-ate, 6.3 to 6.4. Organized this year by act of the 55th Legislature, the Govexmor’s Traffic Safety Council has set a goal of 100 fewer traffic deaths for 1957. Texas stands an excel lent chance of ending this year with fewer deaths than in 1956— if every citizen will support the di’ive to save lives dui’ing the Christmas holidays.
