WIVES CLUB OFFICERS HONORED—New and out-going officers of the Geology Wives Club were entertained Tuesday evening at a coffee at the home of Mrs. Peter Dehlinger, sponsor. Poetry Society Enjoys ‘Tour A picture-tour of Ireland, Scot land and England was enjoyed by members of the Bryan-Colleg’e Station Poetry Society Monday evening, when Miss Malcolm Mc- Innis showed color slides taken last summer in those countries. A sonnet by Charles Lee Hur ley was published in the Dallas Morning News, and jyierle Hudson had an article in last Sunday’s Houston Chronicle. Top Poems Listed Mrs. John Q. Anderson report ed that Dr. Louis Dallarhide, president of the Mississippi Poetry Society who was asked to judge the best poems from the first, second and third place winners of the past four months, had chosen: In the serious verse category— first, “Youth”’ by Charles Lee Hurley; second, “Lament” by Charles Drumwright, and third, “Night Wind” by Drumwright. Spiced tea and cherry tarts were served at the end of the meeting by the hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hudson, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hanna. Prof. E. P. Crittenden of the A&M English faculty will speak on the poet Milton at the next meeting of the society March 11. Hampers CD, GoffDeclares PuhlicApathy Public apathy is the biggest problem facing civil defense lead ers, Lt. Col. P. M. Goff of the School of Military Science told the February meeting of the Amer ican Association of University Women. He stated that this community, having experienced a tornado last spring, should realize the need for a disaster relief organization. He emphasized that civil defense is concerned with natural disasters as well as with attack by an en emy. The local civil defense program has made progress since last spring, Col. Goff said. He stated that the county judge has been made the key coordinator and that College Station has been divided into four different areas with a warden for each. Austin Hometown Club will meet in room 226 of the Academic Building to make plans for the semester’s activities. Midland Hometown Club will James Leadbetter Joins Forest Staff James A. Ledbetter has joined the staff of the Texas Forest Serv ice as a forest management aid in Administrative District 1 at Linden, according to A. D. Fol- weiler, director. He is the first field man hired through the Soil Bank Act, giving technical assistance to East Texas landowners interested in forest tree planting. Leadbetter graduated from Edin burg High School in Edinburg, Texas and received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Stephen F. Austin College. He served with the U. S.
