The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas PAGE 6 Thursday, February 7, 1957 Rioting Prisoners Grab Utah Prison POINT-OF-TIIE - MOUNTAIN, Utah, (A*)—Kioting prisoners grab bed control of much of Utah’s modern state prison last night and held as hostages a number of prison guards and about 25 civil ians. A guard lieutenant was stabbed in the stomach and reported in a critical condition. A prison official said the rioting inmates had “practically got the inside” of the prison under their control. The prisoners sent out word they “wanted to see the gover nor” and Gov. George B. Clyde left his Salt Lake City home to drive to the prison, on a rural site about 20 miles south of the capital. The Utah Highway Patrol or dered all cars in the area to the site and some 75 peace officers were mobilized. The rioters were confined to the main prison building, set back about one-half mile from busy U. S. Highway 91, main north- south artery through Salt Lake Valley. The civilians held included teachers from Jordan High School and Brigham Young University i and members of a basketball team at the prison for a game with the inmates.
