For Failure to Sign Saddler Stripped Of Boxing Crown MILWAUKEE, (^)—The National Boxing- Assn. Wed nesday for the second time in 25 months stripped feather weight champion Sandy Saddler of his crown for failing to sign for a title defense—but added it would “reconsider after he undergoes a physical examination. Fred Saddy, chairman of the NBA’s rating committee who announced the action against Saddler, said the NBA would “bide its time until it learns the outcome of the ex amination.” Shortly after the NBA declared Saddler’s title vacant, the New York State Athletic Commission said it had ordered Saddler’s manager, Charley Johnston, to bring Sandy in for a physical examination to de termine whether he is fit to fight. The commission asked Johnston and Saddler to ap pear Friday or the week af ter. Johnston indicated he could not appear until a week from Friday because his wife is ill. “Saddler will be given every bit of consideration,” Saddy said. “If he is unable to fight that’s a dif ferent story.” Saddy laughed off Johnston’s blast that he would “sue the NBA for a million dollars. . . for taking away the livelihood of a boy be cause he was hurt in an accident and hasn’t recovered enough to fight again.” “Who’s got that kind of mon ey?” asked Saddy. Saddler, now 83 by his own ad mission although the record book lists him as 30, was injured in an auto accident last July and hasn’t fought since. He last defended his 126-pound title Jan 18, 1956, when he stopped Flash Elorde of the Philippines in the 13th round.
