At Charlies Food Market — North Gate, College Station Powell’s TD Dash Spells Difference By BARRY HART After battling to a standstill in the mud of cold, rainy Kyle Field 28 minutes and 10 seconds, Jack Powell swept around left end untouched for 25 yards and a touchdown as the Air Force edged the Army, 6-0, in the fourth annual 12th Man Bowl yesterday. With fourth down and nine yards to go on the Army 25, Powell took a pitchout from Quarterback Pat Patrick, head ed wide around his own left side and streaked into the end zone behind a wave of blocks to break open the muddy struggle for Dee Powell’s eleven with 3:50 left in the game. Up to that time it was strictly a defensive battle with neither team able to manage anything resembling a threat as the Air Force team manag- Grid, Track Dinner Jan, 12 The 1956 Aggie football and cross-country teams will be hon ored by the Athletic Department Saturday Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. at a banquet in Sbisa Hall, according to Barlow Irvin, Asst. Director of Athletics. Bo Roland, a former coach, will be the guest speaker at the annual banquet this year. Morris Frank, columnist of the Houston Chronicle and a widely known emcee will be the master of ceremonies. ed their second victory in a row over the Army eleven. Powell picked up 47 yards in nine trips to lead all rush ers for the afternoon with Lamar Smith, injured late in the first half, getting 39 yards in six car ries. Dan Gilbert owned the larg est rushing average with 21 yards on one carry. Both teams battled evenly throughout the first half with Don Watson’s Army team picking up their only first down of the game on Smith’s 24-yard run around end on the first play from scrimmage for the ground team. The Army’s Word Roberson and Harold Englehardt of the Air Force were put out of the game just before the end of the half for over aggressiveness and the only real action of the first 16 minutes. The game was played in four, eight-minute quarters. The Air Force finally put to gether a long pass and Powell’s run for the only score in the final period. Center John Zeigler punt ed out of bounds on the Air Force 38 midway in the last quarter. Patrick found George Marlow in the left flat and hit him with a pass good for 36 yards to the Ar my 26. Tom Mainer got one up the mid dle and Patrick was dropped for no gain then passed incomplete to set up the fourth and nine situa tion that Powell turned into a vic tory. Ags Go For 4th Win Against Miami Tonight Battling to improve their 3-5 season record and win their second road victory un der Coach Ken Loeffler, A&M puts the cap on their south ern road trip tonight against the Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables, Fla. Losers of three of four so far on this jaunt, the Aggies took their only out-of-town tilt last Thurs day in Tallahassee, bouncing Flor ida State, 83-74. Tonight they hope to make it two straight over Florida schools. Captain George Mehaffey threw in 22 points in the Aggies’ 76-79 loss to Georgia Tech Saturday night to up his total to 129, second behind TCU’s Dick O’Neal in the Southwest Confeence scoring race. Neil Swisher, with 98, and Ken Hutto, with 95, stand fifth and sixth in the net meshing depart ment. , The rest of the conference ac tivity finds Baylor at LSU, and Rice at Oregon State tonight. The Aggies return home Thurs day for a short Christmas vaca tion, then move into Houston on the 27th for the SWC pre-season tournament. The Aggies open against Navy in Houston. Royal, coach of the University of Washington, former coach at North Carolina State, Tulsa, and Mississippi State, and who also did a coaching stint in the Cana dian Professional League, was named to the job vacated through the resignation of Ed Price almost two months ago. Price quit under the fire of the alumni as his team staggered down the trail to the worst season in Texas football history. He was thrice hanged in effigy. His team lost nine of ten games. Your...
