This forecast comes from E. C. McFadden, of Dallas, president of the Texas Safety Association. McFadden says that this num ber of fatalities and injuries will build up unless public officials and citizens’ groups take action to stop this rising toll. The Texas Department of Public Safety, joined by the Texas and National Safety Associations have entered an appeal to individual drivers and pedestrians to make safety their personal responsibility and their community’s. “December is the month when traffic accidents reach a peak,” McFadden says. “Extreme vigil- True Meaning of Christmas By P. L. (PINKY) DOWNS A&M Official Greeter Christmas really means, “Christ the gift to men, women, and chil dren”. To the English people we owe the word, Christmas—Christ Mass—a religious ceremony cele brating the birth of Christ. December 25 is the accepted date of the birth of Christ as He was born at midnight on Christ mas Eve. It is to the Hollanders that we owe the custom of hanging up our stockings. They placed their wood en shoes before the large fire place. But we Americans substi tuted stockings because wooden shoes wouldn’t stretch. The holly wreath that we hang in our homes was copied from the English who believed the holly leaves represented the thorns Christ wore upon the cross, while the little red berries were the drops of His blood. The giving of Christmas pres ents brings out the thought, “Peace on Earth, good will toward men”. It was Gen. W. B. Booth, foun der of the Salvation Army, who was once asked the question if he were solicited to leave a message to the world what it would be. He wrote only one word and signed his name. That word was “oth ers”. Happiness is not seeking pleas ure for ourselves, but doing the necessary things for others. God grant me the power to ac cept things I cannot change; cour age to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference. I think we should pause long enough to thank God for living in a Christian country. You know, I believe in prayer. My definition of prayer would be “communicating with God for that which we de sire, not deserve”. Christmas is a good time to pause long enough to take stock of ourselves and really see of what value we have been through the year to our neighbors, city, county, state and nation. Let us all enter into the Christ mas spirit, love one another, give to those less fortunate than our selves and try to carry out Christ’s teachings. ance is needed by drivers and ped estrians. During the harried holi day season, people tend to be care less.” There were 21 deaths on Texas streets and highways last Christ mas, McFadden says. “That is hardly the way to have a Merry Christmas,” he says. A&M College officials had pre dicted that two Aggie students would die in accidents during the holidays. One student has been killed instantly since the predic tion. McFadden lists the following as precautions to cut down on traffic accidents from driver and pedes trian actions: For Drivers 1. Keep your mind on your job and be alert for extra dangers. 2. Remember darkness doubles danger. Slow down at sundown. This means no hurrying home be cause you let the time get away while shopping. 3. Slow down in bad weather and adjust your driving to condi tions at all times. You can’t change the weather, but you can change your driving habits. 4. If you drive, don’t drink— if you drink, don’t drive. On Foot 1. Obey all traffic signals and signs. The Signs of Life can seve yours. 2. Cross at intersections ONLY! Remember the law favors the ped estrian when he crosses at marked crossings and with the light. 3. Never walk into the street from behind parked cars. Give the motorist, and yourself, a chance to avoid danger. CHRISTMAS TOYS SEE THEM NOW FOR HIM F 0R her STUDENT CO-OP Open Until 8 P.M.
