The transaction was expected to seen off a chain-reaction of deals which have been hanging fire at the major league meetings. In what John Holland, vice- president of the Cubs described as “only the first of several deals we have in mind,” Chicago obtained catcher Ray Katt, relief pitcher Jackie Collum and infielder Wally Hammers along with Poholsky. With sophomores Neil Swisher and Jack Schwake hitting from outside and Captain George Me- For First, 61-58 By DON BISETT Assistant Sports Editor Clinging - desperately to a 17-point half time lead the A&M fish fought off a strong Freshman team from the Uni versity of Houston to rack up a 61 to 58 win in the early game last Friday night. Wayne Lawrence and Dave Corson dominated the back- boards and the scoring column as the Fish showed the home town crowd their wares.. Lawrence, 6-8 freshman center, took scoring honors as he pumped in 26 points. He hit 13 of 19 field goal attempts in this showing for a percentage of 68.4 from the floor. Corson, the other Fish standout, was runnerup m the scoring column with 18 and led in rebounds with 16 haffey controlling the backboards, the Aggies led the first half, 34- 29, but saw the Wolf pack tie up the game with 15:37 left. A&M hit 40 per cent of their shots the first half while Loyola hit but 18. It was the shooting of 5-11 John Lorio and 6-5 Pete Gau- din who paced the second half Wolf pack spree. Gaudin had 26 points for the night—20 of them in the second half—while Lorio hit 16 of his 17 in the same period. Swisher left the game with five minutes remaining with a sprain ed ankle while Mehaffey fouled out with three minutes left. Swisher took high point honors for the visitors with 18 followed by Schwake’s 15 and Mehaffey’s 13 as the Aggies suffered their third consecutive out-of-town loss of the new basketball season. Their record now stands at 2-3. BOX SCORE Corson hit 8 out of 9 attempts from the floor to have a phe- nominal 88% swish through the hoop. The U of H freshmen, who were cold in the opening stanza, hit 42 points in the second half against 28 for the Fish. Pete Markle scored 18 points and Jackie Crawford got 17 to lead the U of H team. As a team the Fish hit 27 of 50 attempts from the field while the Cougars hit 22 of 73. Houston hit 14 of 23 from the line and Cadets only seven of 20. A total of 58 of the 108 basket ball writers and sportscasters casting ballots put Kansas as the No. 1 team on early victories over Northwestern and Marquette. The Jayhawkers polled 896 points. Kentucky drew solid support, in cluding six firsts, to hold third place with 514 points on its per fect 3-0 record.
