r M.E. Wives Take First Aid Course Some 15 members of the Me chanical Engineering Wives Club have begun a nine-weeks course in First Aid as a project for the sum mer under the direction of W. M. Dowell of the ■ Physical Education Department. “Fewer accidents occur with per sons who have had Fix-st Aid ti’ain- ing than with those who have not”, accoi'ding to Dowell, who coached tennis in the Athletic department. Instructions ai’e given every Monday night fx-om 7:30 to 9:30 in G. Rollie White Coliseum to the members. In the course of study the gix-ls are taught the pui-poses and x’ules of First Aid, what to do for shock, poisons, injuries to bones, joints and muscles, injuries due to heat or cold, wounds and their care, how to apply bandages and dressings, and also a genei’al knowledge of the human body to give them a better undei’standing of the coui'se .Pi'o- B.A. Wives Club Hear Mrs. Ross The Business Wives Club held their fix-st meeting of the summer Monday night with a talk by Mrs. Betty Ross, a representative of the Round the Wox-ld Tour. Mrs. Ross showed different gifts fx-om the various countries, explain ing histories on a few. One pax-ticular gift fx-om India was an Aftaba which x-esembles a jug. The saying goes that the In dians went to a special river every year to cleanse their sins filling the Aftaba with mud from the river. Dux-ing the following year if they committed a sin they would smear the mud on their fox-ehead, thus easing the sin. Gifts that were displayed were brass wall plaques and plates from England; fruit bowls, candle hold ers in a xnilk glass type, from Ger many; a milk glass lamp fx-om Wil liamsburg along with many other unusual articles. Refreshments of cream cheese and chicken salad sandwiches and coffee and cokes wex-e served by Mx-s. Kathx-yn Moellex*, sponsor and hostess for the evening. bably one of the most important pax-ts of their coux-se is the section on artificial respiration. One point that Coach Dowell im- px-esses on his students is that fix-st aidex-s never take the place of the doctox-. “Fix-st Aid is the immediate and tempox-ax-y cax-e given the victim of an accident or sudden illness until the services of a physiciaix can be obtained,” accox-ding to the official Fix-st Aid manual. Persons who are schooled in Fix-st Aid know that it could meaxi the diffex-ence between life and death, between rapid recovery and long hospitalization, between tem porary disability and pex-manent injury. The M. E. Wives Club felt that they should have a knowledge of first aid what with all the bumps and bruises that accompany the x-aising of childx-en. The standard fix-st aid course has approximately 18 houx-s of class- work which can be divided into three hour pex-iods or two hour periods. Axxy member of the com munity can pax-ticipate in the px-o- gram by entex-ing the classes that are given pex-iodically. Persons intex-ested in entering the next session should call John Hill, VI 6-5414 or Coach Dowell at VI 6-5749.
