One of the tightest pitching duels of the season is due here today when the conference’s two leading hurlers face each other in the first of a two-game series between A&M and SMU. Game time is 3 p.m. at Kyle field. Tomorrow’s contest begins at 2. Rubber-armed lefty Joe Hardgrove meets SMU’s crack right-hander, Tommy Bowers, in the first encounter between the two pitchers in conference play. Hardgrove sports a perfect 5-0 slate, while Bowers leads the league with a 6-0 mark. Hardgrove has started and fin ished all his games, while Bowers had to have aid in only one. Bowers has twirled 45 frames in conference play, giving up 25 hits, 23 free passes and has fanned 44 batters. Eleven runs have been charged to him, and he holds a 1.64 earned run average. Big Jerry Nelson will take the mound for A&M tomorrow, against the Mustangs’ Ernie Proud. Nel son brings a 1-1 conference record into Saturday’s game. Proud comes into the contest with a 2-0 ledger. The Aggies will he out to dupli cate a feat here two years ago when they knocked Bowers out of the box in a 14-6 win over the Ponies. The loss caused SMU to fall short of the undisputed con ference championship, and wind up in a tie with Texas. A sweep of the two games for SMU would mean an almost cer tain conference crown, while a split would help SMU more than the Aggies. The Mustangs rank first in the conference with an 8-0 record. A&M is 2 1 A games back with 5-2. A&M has another crack at SMU, if the game would alter the outcome of the championship. Bowers also leads SMU hitters with a .412 average in conference action. He has six hits in 14 times at bat. Hollingsworth turned in a 14 flat in the highs with a favorable wind in the Texas-Rice triangular here, best in the nation. Hartung’s 23.3 in the lows, also with an aid ing wind, is one of the best record ed in the nation. “They are our best chances for first places,” Anderson said. “We ought to pick up a good many thirds and fourths—possibly some seconds—in the field events, but Texas and Southern Cal should win the running events. “We should place in all the field events except the javelin, and may win fourth there. USC should win the meet, because they’ll beat us in the track and Texas in the field events.” Anderson will enter this Aggie squad: Don Watson and Carol Coyer, sprints; Bill Holloway and John Roberts, 440; Hollingsworth and Hartung, low and high hurdles; Verlon Westmoreland and Carl Wilmsen, mile; Bill Cocke and Fidel Rul, two mile; Roberts, Bob McKnight, Wal ly Kleb and Holloway, mile relay; Hartung, Watson, Holloway, and Coyer, 440 relay; Tom Bonorden, Herman Johnson and Harry Cox, shot; Lee Newman, Bonorden and Johnson, discus; Gene Henderson and Joe Schiraldi, javelin; Winton Thomas, James Clark and James Jackson, pole vault; Fritzie Connally and Schi raldi, high jump; Bobby Robison and Dale Elmore, broad jump.
