The Aggies now lead the young SWC race with a 3-0 record. Rated no better than fourth in pre-season predictions, the Aggies dumped TCU 10-9 and Baylor 4-2 to take a half game lead over second-place SMU. TCU and Baylor were both rated above the Aggies, with the Frogs getting the role of title favorites. The Cadets’ fine 8-2 season record also rates tops in the conference, well ahead of SMU’s 5-4 mark. Pinky Cooner takes the mound for the Fish against Allen academy here at 3 p. A&M used Hardgrove’s master ful pitching and timely hitting to produce its 4-2 win over the Bears. The Aggies spotted Baylor two unearned runs in the first inning- on two errors and two hits. Hardgrove settled down after the opening stanza, and pitched to only 26 batters in the next eight frames. Fred Ablon scored A&M’s first run in the last of the third to make it 2-1. The Aggies staged a rally in the bottom of the sixth to pro duce three big runs. Joe Boring scored the first run of the inning on a pop-bunt single by Dick Bleckner. Joe Schero’s double off the boards in deep center scored Bleck ner and Ablon with what proved to be the winning margin. After a nine run first inning by the Baylor Cubs, Toby Newton came in for the Fish and pitched one-hit, shut out ball. Newton struck out 13 and walk ed only three in 8 2/3 innings. It was the Southwest conference opener for the Cadets and put them in a first-place tie with SMU, Texas and Arkansas. The Aggie Fisly downed! the Baylor Cubs 5-1, Aggie Bobby Nichols shooting a 69 for low score. Briggs defeated Johnny Thorn ton, 4 and 3. Thornton was low for Baylor with a 70. Marcelino Moreno downed BU’s Bill Cozart, 5 and 4; David Vandervoort downed Eddie Parma, 2 and 1, and James Durbin beat Jim Baber, 5 and 4. Briggs and Moreno teamed to beat Thornton and Cozart, 5 and 4 in doubles. Vandervoort and Durbin defeated Parma and Baber, 4 and 3. Ken Helms defeated Aggie Fish Stewart Nuckols, 2 and 1 for Baylor’s only victory. Nichols outshot Ronnie Honeycutt, 4 and 3; Joe McKune downed Jim Walker, 5 and 4; and Richard Chapman defeated Jim Blackmon, 5 and 4. In doubles, Nichols and McKune beat Honeycutt and Walker, 4 and 3, and Nuck ols and Chapman defeated Helms and Blackmon, 3 and 2. Next meet for the Aggies is the South western Invitational tourney in Houston Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Riflers Split Meet With The Citadel A&M’s Southwest conference champion rifle team outfired The Citadel 1871-1859 here Saturday, C. E. Bombardier leading the way with a high score of 380 out of a possible 400. The Aggie Fish lost to The Cita del frosh, 1814-1833. Varsity scores for the Cadets were Guy Andrews, 379; D. D. Phillips, 369; Sidney Ferrell, 363; Bombardier, 380; Fred Galley, 373; Dan Grissom, 370. . A&M freshman scores were James Costa, 362; Bennett Todd, 368; Alfred Kirst, 339; Roscoe Van Zandt, 349; James Cook, 372; Dyek Boles, 363. Track Meet Team, Rests? Called Off 8 10 With tonight’s scheduled dual meet here with East Texas State called off, the Aggie track team takes a rest until the April 16th Houston triangular with Rice and SMU. At the Texas Relays last week, the Cadets failed to take a single first place, even though shotput- ters Tom Bonorden and Herman Johnson had the best marks of their careers. Bonorden reached 52-1114 to finish second to Kansas’ Bill Nie- der, who posted 53-10. Johnson had 52-9% and was also fourth in the discus, with 144-7%. Bon orden qualified with 51-%, John son with 52-214. Fritzie Connally high jumped 6-4 for the third time this year to finish in a four way tie for sec ond with John Whatley, Hardin- Simmons, Bernard Allard, Notre Dame and Ray McDonald, Texa^ Tech. Kenneth Kelley of North Texas State won first with 6-6. Connally barely missed at that height on his last try. Pole vaulter Winton Thomas reached 13-0 to place for third with four others. Earl Poucher of Florida, last year’s NCAA co champion, and Stephen James of Rice tied for first with 13-6. Tho mas had pushed James to 13-11 in a dual meet here with Rice two weeks ago while posting 13-8. The Aggie four mile relay team of John Whitwell, Bob Boles, Ver- lon Westmoreland and Bill Cocke was fourth in a four team race. Oklahoma A&M set a new relays record of 17:10.6 in winning the event. Hurdler James Hollingsworth was the only other Aggie to qual ify. He ran second in his qualify ing heat in 14.7 but finished out of the money in the finals. Harley Hartung ran his qualifying heat in 14.9, just above the 14.8 of Rice’s Wesley flight, the last man to qualify. Aggies Down TCU 4-2,3-0 in Tennis A&M’s varsity tennis team even ed its Southwest conference record at 1-1, beating TCU 4-2 here Satur day. The Aggie freshmen blanked the Wogs, 3-0. The Cadets won the first four singles matches, then dropped the last singles and the opening doubles before Gene Kinard and Don Dixon took the last doubles, saving A&M from a 3-3 tie. By BARRY HART Intramural Writer Jim Adams, the last batter to face him, ruined Tom Roberts bid for a no-hitter yesterday, singling in the winning run as B infantry edged D infantry 2-1 in a tight pitching duel. John Beaty, the winning hurler, gave up only three hits. Four consecutive doubles in an eight-run fourth inning helped squadron 20 submerge B field ar tillery, 13-6. Jerry Hughes, Tommy McLaugh lin, Delbert Driskiil and Bob Skin ner all collected two-baggers to go along with four walks in the runaway fourth. McLaughlin also stroked a pair of singles for a per fect day at the plate. Juan Ramirez and Don Benes slugged homers and George Bowen gave up but one hit as squadron 10 downed A chemical, 6-2. The army men got both their runs in the first on an error, three walks and a triple by John Foster. Squadron 11 sent 14 men to the plate in the second inning, scored all their 10 runs and ran away front A anti-aircraft artillery, 10- 4. Bill Olander and Jim Owen hit four-baggers for the winners. Squadron 12 got off to an early lead but a nine-run fourth by B anti-aircraft artillery beat them 13-9, Joe Lee tripled and Barney Burris homered in that frame, with Alton McNulty homering for the losers in the first. D infantry scored nine times in the second to edge B infantry, 11-8; squadron 15 defeated squadron 9, 8-3, with all of their runs coming in the second; C field artillery beat squadron 21, 4-3; and A in fantry downed C infantry, 4-2 to round out Monday’s freshmen card.
