Page 4 THE BATTALION - hursday, March 3, 1955 Garden Center Holds Major Flower Show The San Antonio Garden center, comprising 81 affiliated garden clubs', will sponsor its first major flower show, “Through Garden Portals,” March 11-13, at the Bexar county coliseum in San Antonio. Mrs. Porter Loring is president of the center and Mrs. C. B. Kil patrick is general chairman. Join ing in to help produce the floral show will be the Men’s Garden club, the San Antonio Nurserymen’s as sociation and the Junior Garden clubs of the city as well as the two therapy clubs—Lone Star Garden club for the mentally ill and the Lamplight for the Blind. There will be a junior division where children of garden club members and the junior garden clubs will have various types of entries. The educational and con servation divisions will have ex hibits of trees especially adapted to this area that are drought resist ant, and visual education on how to propagate a tree as well as shrubs suitable for food and cover for Texas songbirds. Another ex hibit will be on how to have a wild- flower sanctuary in gardens. STEELERS HAD KISS OF DEATH PITTSBURGH—UP)—-The annual National Football league lottery for new players is proving to be the kiss of death for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Of 19 players named by the Steelers as their No. 1 draft choice, nine either failed to make the grade or refused to play pro football. None of the remaining 10 has proved to be an outstanding star. Admission to the show will be $1 for adults and 50 cents for chil dren six to 14. No admission will be charged for children under six or hospitalized military personnel. Five Journals Use Hancock Articles C. Kinney Hancock, chemistry professor and research chemist with the Texas Engineering Ex periment station, had articles pub lished in five national journals dur ing 1954. With G. M. Watson and R. F. Gilby, Hancock co-authored a re port titled “Heats of Combustion of the Five-Carbon Fatty Acids and Their Methyl and Ethyl Esters” which appeared in the March issue of the Journal of Physical Chemis try. In August the Journal of Chemi cal Education published his article, the Quantitative Analysis Note book and in September a paper titled “Performance of Soils Ver sus Chemical Properties” was pub lished by the American Society of Civil Engineers under the cover title Proceedings Separate No, 499. Two journals carried Hancock articles in their November issues. A report on the “Determination of Water in Soils by an Indirect Con ductivity Method” which C. M.
