The Bearcats pushed across six runs in the big inning on four hits, including a double, triple and homerun. Ten men came to bat for Sam Houston before relief hurler Tex Vanzura finally quelched the rally. Big men in the Bearcat uprising were third baseman Dick Garcia and outfielder Joe Pearson. Garcia lofted a ball over the left field fence after Pearson had tripled, to make it 6-0. Starter Jerry Nelson was taken out in the third after giving up two hits and four runs, all of them earned. He was "the losing pitcher. The Aggies nicked starter Hubert Boales for only five hits and two runs. Three of A&M’s hits were for extra bases. Sam Houston picked up three more runs in the top of the sev enth. Bob Casey lined a long sin gle to left driving in Boales and Garcia, and scored on a one bagger by Clarence Shimfessel. A&M finally found its batting eye in the bottom of the seventh frame, and hustled across two runs. First baseman John Hoyle led off with a stand-up two bagger and tallied on a two-base smash by catcher Jimmy Williams. Williams scored on a single by Dick Bleck- ner. The Cadets put together their final run making efforts in the last of the ninth. Williams, Bleek- ner, and Joe Schero were issued free passes by reliefer Hap Rob erts to load the bases, and Williams scored on a force out. IF YOU OWNED ONLY ONE SHIRT... Southwest conference shot and discus champion Bobby Gross may be unable to compete because of a leg injury. Anderson said yes terday that Gross could hardly walk that morning. Bobby Robison, the Aggies’ only returning letterman in the broad jump, is injured, and Harry Cox, thii-d place finisher in the shot last year, recently suffered a broken ankle playing ping pong. Hurdlers and weightmen are ex pected to gamer most of A&M’s points in this meet and the rest of the season. Even with Gross and Cox injured, Tommy Bonorden and Herman Johnson are a defi nite threat in the weights class. Johnson had an undefeated sea son last year as a freshman and is already pressing the other three, all of whom have tossed over 50 et. Texas’ sprint stars tend to point to the defending SWC champions as the team to beat. A familiar face returns to the Longhorn front at Dean Smith, co-holder of the conference 100-yard dash record of 9.5, returns after a year’s layoff. U of H brings a good array of middle distance runners and hurd lers into the meet and appear about as strong as last year. In this meet last year, Texas finished seven points above the Aggies, and the Cougars followed about 10 points behind A&M. Bryant High On Three Ag Lettermen After sending- a squad now numbering 65 through their seventh day of spring football practice yesterday, head coach Paul Bryant praised the show ing of three lettermen. They were fullback Jack Pardee, end Gene Stallings and tackle Jack Powell. “They’re setting the pace, particularly Stallings and Pardee, and I'd like to give them a pat on the back," Bryant said. Bryant thought the Aggies “had a real good day” Tuesday but “looked a little ragged” yestei’day “Our quartei’back operation is still holding us up, but they’re coming along,” said Bryant. “We’ll try to have a little more team drills and concentrate more on of fense. “We have about 23 or 24 boys we know have got to play, and we’re going to have to start get ting them ready.” Bryant was pleased with the way playex^s involved in position switches were coming along. Bobby Drake Keith, a halfback last year, changed to end, “is coming along fine there—(forrner fullback Billy) Gi’anberx*y too, we just moved him yesterday or the day before. Dee Powell (a 1954 tackle) is all right at guard.” Most serious injury suffered so far has been sophomore center John Gilbert’s hurt knee. Yesterday the Maroons had El- wood Kettler, 1954 stax-ter, at quar- tei-back, lettex-man Don Watson and soph Ed Dudley at halfbacks and Pardee at full. The line was Keith and Stall ings, ends; soph Charles Krueger and Jack Powell, tackles; senior Henry Clark and soph Paul Lillard, guards; and senior letterman Herb Wolf, center. aim CIGARETTES ODERN SIZE Eajoy the Best in Filtered Smoking!
