Battalion Editorials P O G O By Walt Kelly Page 2 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1952 The True Spirit Of Christmas: Hope A GAIN ... IT IS CHRISTMAS and over the far-flung places of the Earth, hearts and minds as one, search for the sign of awakening, a rebirth of the symbol of Peace on Earth . .. Good Will to Men. Across strange lands, mute crosses stand to mark man’s greater love for freedom than for life. Guns speak . . . yet do not drown the hopes, the aspirations, the glory of the broth erhood of man. This year, of all years, let the true spirit of Christmas bring us hope. That men may return to sanity, mercy, love, duty, forbear ance. That through the faith and courage of our people ... the spirit of Christmas shall ever live ... to guide the destinies of men. Can You Keep Christmas? ARE YOU WILLING to forget what you have done for other people, and to re member what other people have done for you; to ignore what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world; to put your rights in the background, and your du ties in the middle distance and your chances to do a little more than your duty in the fore ground; to see that your fellowmen are just as real as you are, and try to look behind their faces to their hearts, hungry for joy; to own that probably the only reason for your existence is not what you are going to The First Christmas Night The dark hill crouched ’round Bethlehem, Like hooded monks at prayer, Slept on in timeless peace, nor saw A new star shining there. But shepherds drowsing near their flocks Looked up with startled eyes, And saw the winged Heavenly Host Spread glory through the skies. The village in the valley slept, Save where one small, dim light Shone from a lowly stable, where A child was born that night. The mother held her first-born close, And breathed a mother’s prayer; She did not see the shadow Of a cross above them there. Nor did she know the child she held So close against her breast, Would bring to earth good will and peace, And to the weary rest. •—Mabel Clare Thomas The Christmas poem above was written by Mrs. F. L. Thomas of 1309 Walton. Mrs. Thomas’ poetry has been published in the Saturday Evening Post and other magazines. Two years ago she won a prize for the best lyric poem submitted to the South west Writer’s Conference. Another of her poems, “Posthumous Award”, is in this week’s National Churchman magazine. get out of life, but what you are going to give to life; to close your book of complaints against management of the universe, and look around you for a place where you can sow a few seeds of happiness—are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas. —Henry Van Dyke. At College Station Churches Most of the College Station churches are planning special Christmas and New Year’s Day services.
