Page 6 TTit 1 BATTAT/fON Thursday, Match 22,1951 Friendship Appeal Made By Acheson to Reds Washington, March 22—h'P)— Secretary of State Acheson ap pealed today for friendship from the Soviet bloc peoples, but ad vised them that while Americans “covet peace, we will not sell our souls for it.” “The peace we seek, is not sim ply the absence of war but a sound and free collaboration among” na tions in a pattern of responsibility •based on mutual respect,” he said. “The great structure of peace which the United States and its allies are building will never be complete until all the peoples now under domination by the Kremlin participate in full partnership.” Acheson’s statement was in let ters to Senate and House Foreign Affairs Committee chairmen ex tending strong administration sup port to a resolution reaffirming American friendship for all other neonles. The resolution, sponsored by Senator McMahon (D-Conn) and Rep. Ribicoff (D-Conn). specifical ly names the Soviet peole. Acheson also included the peo ple of China, “now suffering the tragedy of life behind the Iron Curtain.” The resolution calls on Russia to transmit the bid for friendship to the Russian peoples, and Ache son said this points to the Krem lin’s opportunity for “setting af fairs on a better course.” “A start could be made,” he sug gested, “by letting the tmth flow freely into and within the Soviet Union.” With the friendship plea the secretary coupled the statement that the West is determined to create the kind of peace he de scribed. Acheson said that in the past year the western nations have made progress toward that end. Asked for an assessment of the world situation on the first day of Spring, he said he though the situation of the West is stronger and better than it was a year ago in both Asia and Europe. Atlee Paying Patient At Britain Hospital London, March 22—CP)—Prime Minister Attlee went into a hos pital yesterday for treatment for a possible ulcer. He helped father Britain’s na tional health service but he is a paying natient, He will have a room to himself in the government- operated hospital. The Paschal Drake apartment in College View looked like a minia ture fair ground Wednesday afternoon as the small social set joined violet-eyed Cydnie to help celebrate her third birthday. Varicolored balloons hung Horn the ceiling and small moppets consumed enough cake and ice cream to last them ’til the next party, which they loudly proclaimed should not be at too advance a date. IT’S A LONG LONG WAY from here to Joliet, Illinois, when the distance separates good friends, so pretty brunette Marilyn Henry did something about it. She came to Aggieland, U.S.A., last week, and has been a guest of the MSC while she visits with Gordon Simpson, ag engineering major, also from Joliet. Though Marilyn has been to Texas before, she had never visited Aggieland. She is a graduate of Joliet Township High School, will go home Monday. THIRD FINGER, LEFT HAND. Maurice and Dorothy Jo Dobbs are at home in College Station following their Saturday night wed ding in Waco. Dorothy is the former Miss Koons of Honolulu, Hawaii. She is a senior student at Baylor University. Her husband is a senior petroleum engineering major here. Among their wedding attendants was Aggie Charles Neeley. In Cason, Texas,recently Alfred H. Fowler, Jr., ’49, and Eddie Mae Lumpkins said their vows. The newlyweds are at home in Dain- gerfield. ... On April 21 in Beeville, Edythe Jo Walker will be wed to Robert B. Laswell, ’4b. Richard Richard, former student here, now with the First Marine division in Korea, and Delores Jennings have announced their engagement in Port Arthur. Official Notice Air Force ROTC students who will grad uate and be commissioned in June 1951 will be ordered to active military service within 90 days of their appointment. They may, if they so desire, apply immediately for flying training or meteor ology training. Distinguished military students who have declined regular Air Force Commissions tendered them will also he ordered to ac tive service as reserve officers. Initial assignments for officers called to active duty will be in the United States. Deferments from Call to active duty may be requested by those officers who are qualified for and desire to take post grad uate work in courses of primary interest to the Air Force. These courses are professional and tech nical ones for which the Air Force has an outstanding requirement. Students affected by this new ruling should report to M/Sgt. There was a bit of freezing in parts of northwest Texas as Wed nesday began. But before the day was over skies were generally fair, and at their highest temperatures ranged from 62 at Childress to 88 at El Paso. For the cupcakes, line a pan of 12 muffin tins with cup cake hold ers (these may be purchased at most ten cent and grocery stores, keep the cakes in shape and avoid all chance of the cakes sticking.) Use this recipe, which is quick and very simple. Sift together 114 cups flour, % cups sugar, 2 teaspoons of baking powder and Ms teaspoon of salt into a mixing bowl. Drop in Mi cup of shortening (either margarine or a fine grade of fat.) Mix IMs minutes (with mixer, or 2 minutes by hand.) Add cup milk, IMa teaspoons vanilla and 1 egg. Mix 1 Mi minutes again. Bake in mod erate oven for 20 minutes, or until done. Cool and top each with a frosting made by melting 5 ounces semi-sweet chocolate with 2 table spoons margarine over hot water. Add this gradually to 114 cup sift ed confectioners sugar. Add dash of salt and 2 or 3 tablespoons warmed top milk or cream (use until of good stirring consistency). Top cakes. S. for further hospitalization. The Red Cross needs thousands of new volunteers to serve our expanding military force. The Brazos County Chapter Red Cross is currrently trying to raise $12,321 for Red Cross work locally and throughout the world in a membership drive scheduled to end March 31. Dean French Plans C. Clement French, dean of the college, will serve on the steering committee for a sub-regional meet ing on Defense Programs to be held in Memphis, Tenn., March 23- 24, under the auspices of the To Attend Meeting Board of Control for Southern Re gional Education. Dean French will also attend the sixth annual National Conference on Higher Education to be held in Chicago, April 2-4.
