Jone* story is told in the current Texas Aggie. nesrs(ia[ier of the Association of Former Students The Agg^e takes its entire edition telling the Jones story, and it is quite a story Headlined Jessie H. Jones Has Been A&M’s Host Consistent Backer for Three lieeades.' the Aggie traces Mr Jones' life from his birth on a Tennessee tobacco farm to bis present position of prominence in American financial, lumbering, and newsjiaiier circles. During the thirties, Mr. Janes completed such governmental positions ss Secretary of Commerce Fed eral lioan Administrator, and Chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. While Mr Junes was chairman of the RPC ASM gained a $2 000.000 loan from the RFC in 193* for the construction of the New Area”. Many times Mr‘Jones has acted on behalf of the College, and h»s efforts have been of great bgfiefit to the College Jessie Junes not’a college man (I did n't go very far in school myself, quit around the eigth grade, but \ had a good .deal of trouble with all of my subjecta- all except srithmetk- 1, received the soc- md honorary degree ever conferred by AAM—as LA D. conferred on November 5 1936 His swcert belief in education >• demonstrated by his gift of a large |>art (tf hm estate to Houston Endowment In- o•orated, a trust which handles his philanthropies, chiefly toward educational gufposee. Presently 26 men are attending A&M Under his scholarship*. These 26 are a pert of more than 300 current scholar ships he hss given to men and women m several colleges. The life of Mr Jones is an inspiring example of the rise of a man from mod erate and obscure circumstances in his chid hood to great power and fortune dur ing his later years He is one of the very few wealthy men in this nation who gained great wealth without benefit <ff a large in heritance or the (KWHeipion of oil lands At 76.
