The project is under the di rection of Dr. Hermann Schlenk of th$ A&4I Depart ment of Biochemistry and Nu trition, according to Dr. CarJ Lyman, head of the depart ment. • jl Carotene, a plant pi irnient which animals convert into [Vitamin A, is necessary in the rations of live stock and poultry. A) severe lack of [ this vitamin prevents; normal growth and successful reproduce tioh, affects the neryous system and causes blindness. , It has been found that carotene is destroyed by ox dation, and steadily deteriorates while the kl- falfa meal is in storage. The re sult is that after a number of months, this feed may not contain enough carotene to prevent vitamin A deficiency, Dr. Lyman said. A suitable compound which may be mixed with the fe?d to inhibit oxidation is being sought, a)nd an entirely new process! ig procedure which gives promise )f yielding a superior product is being investi gated.
