Mundt of Port Arthur, art chairman for the Fourth District, Texas Federation of Women’s clubs, presents awards for outstanding works in the Federation’s art exhibit which was placed in the Country Club during the Federation Convention, Feb. 28 and March 1. Gardner, j j |- , ; | |. |* j | ] h Future Aggies And Tessies Will Shine In Baby Contest Proud mothers and fathers are invited to get out the best pictures of junior and little sis in preparation for a new event on the A&M Campus—the woman’s page baby con test! Anyone connected with the College may present an entry—student, employee, or professor. The contest will begin with the next issue of the+ woman’s page, Tuesday, March 14, and the deadline for sending in pictures will be announced later. Many prizes will be given, and they will be listed during the course of the contest. Judges will be named at the close of the con test . The rules of the contest are simple. Just send a glossy print of your baby’s picture. A head view will make the best showing. Kodak pictures are acceptable, but will not make as good an appear ance in the paper as a regular pho tograph. Age limit for the con test is 2% years. All pictures which conform with the rules will be published each week as they are received. At the end of the contest, they will be submittd to the judging committee for the awarding of prizes. De cision of the judges will be final. Send in your baby’s picture to day so that he will be eligible for a number of prizes suitable for his age and sex. Ross Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confed eracy has received a letter from Mrs. Coke M. Tilley, president, Texas Division of the UDC, stat ing that she will be at A&M Col lege on May 8 to present the UDC saber to the outstanding cadet at the College. The letter was read at a recent meeting of the chapter. Aggies '68 James Daulton Flanders was born to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth D. Flanders of College Station on Feb. 21 in St. Joseph’s Hospital. Pur pose of the meeting is to elect oficers, decide on time of meet ing, and write club constitution. Please be present. VM ’51 Wives Hold Meeting The regular Wednesday night meeting of the V.M. ’51 Wives Club was held at the home of Mrs. S. W. Krug. The club president, Mrs. Ruby Fuchs, called the meeting to order. A letter of resignation was re ceived from the secretary, Mrs. Holly Womack; so a re-election for that office was held. Mrs. Joyce Smith is the new secretary. A check was taken for the pur pose of bringing the dist of names, addresses, and telephone numbers of members up to date. The list will be distributed to all members. A spring social was discussed, but no definite plans were made. The matter was referred to the so cial chairman and her committee and will be brought up again at the next meeting. After the business meeting, many types of card games were en joyed and refreshments were served. Club Will Start New Radio Series The Bryan-College Station Bus iness and Professional Women’s Club is starting a new radio se ries, “News and Views,” which will be heard every Friday at 5:15 p. m. over station WTAW. Mrs. F .L. Thomas, radio chair man for the club, says that the program is designed to be of in terest to everyone, though it should appeal particularly to the women. There will be interviews with inter esting and distinguished people ap pearing in Bryan and College Sta tion, book reviews, news of wom en around the world who are suc cessful in the business and pro fessional fields—“stories of real achievement,” according to Mrs. Thomas. Mrs. Thomas takes a very active part in radio work in College Sta tion. She may be heard over WTAW every Sunday morning at 8:45 on the “Home Bookshelf.” On Saturday at 5:15 p.m. she broad casts a children’s story hour. Leftover lamb may be diced and moistened with leftover gravy, then topped with mashed potatoes and heated in a moderate oven. Add a small can of drained chopped mushrooms and a little minced parsley to the lamb for a company touch. omen J Corner Co THE BATTALION TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 1949 Page 3 College Station Artists Place First In Exhibit Many College Station women were awarded prizes in the art ex hibit held in connection with the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs convention held in Bryan and College Station, Feb. 28 and March 1. At a Fine Arts program held Feb. 28 in Sbisa Hall on the Campus, Marie Haines won first place in the professional senior section for her painting “Por trait,” done in pastels. Second place in this section also went to a College Station resident, E m o 1 i t a Newto n Terry, for “Snapdragons” done in oil. In the non-professional senior section, first place was won by Mary Reeves of College Station for the painting “Indian Woman in Central America,” using oil. Clar ice Holloway of Port Arthur placed second with “The Parade.” Third place was won by Florence Miller of Port Arthur for an oil paint- tin, “Summertime.” Honorable mention in this sec tion went to Helen Perry of Col lege Station, Maud Honis of Port Arthur, Emma Lavelle of Port Arthur, Mrs. I. W. Kernodle of Bryan, Mrs. W. C. Mundt of Port Arthur, and Jeannette Moyer of Port Arthur. In the junior or college sec tion, Boyce Bennett of College Station won both first and sec ond prizes. First place went to an oil painting, “Autumn,” and second went to another oil, “Meditation.” Kelsie Roach of College Station placed third with a pastel, “Amincon Still Life.” George Thomas of College won an honorable mention in this class for a pencil sketch, “Vegetables.” Kelsie Roach received honorable mention for a pastel, “Madonna- Shells.” In the public school art division, John Wennerbom of Port Arthur placed first with “Meeting on the Corner,” in watercolor. Martha Ergel of College Station won second place with “Texture Study,” in chaircoal. Third place went to Joan Rivers of Port Ar thur with “Pet,” an oil on paper. Marion Gaddes of College Sta tion won an honorable mention in this class as did Michael McHabon of Port Arthur. Judges were Miss Essie Mc- Swain of Wellborn, assisted by Mrs. J. M. Nance and Mrs. C. A. Greer of College Station; and Mrs. W. C. Mundt of Port Ar thur, Fourth District art chair man. Companies donating prizes were Permanete Pigments of Cincim nati, Ohio; Watson-Guptill Publi cations, Inc. of New York and Sherwin-Williams, Co., of Port Arthur. Mrs. Mundt also donated a prize. Judge Sarah T. Hughes of the 14th District will appear at a luncheon given by the Bryan-College Station AAUW March 19 in the Maggie Parker Dining Room, Bryan. Judge Hughes, who is state chairman of the committee on economic and legal status of women of the American Association of University Women, will be guest speaker for the occasion. Judge Hughes Of Dallas Will Speak At Luncheon Judge Sarah T. Hughes of Dallas will be guest speaker of the Bryan-College Station Branch of The American Asso ciation of University Women at a luncheon on Saturday, March 19. The luncheon will be held at 1:15 p.m. at the Maggie Parker Dining Room. Mesdames A. W. Melloh and Leonard Wing, chairmen of the legislative-^ — and economic and legal status of women committees, respectively, are in charge of arrangements. Judge Hughes, state chairman of the committee on economic and legal status of women, AAUW, was admitted to the Texas bar in October, 1922, and practiced law in Dallas from then until February, 1935. At that time, she was ap pointed judge of the 14th District by Governor James V. Allred. College Station Churchwomen Observe World Day Of Prayer The College Station Council of Church Women joined with 74 different countries, around the globe in observing World Day of Prayer services on Friday, March 4, at 3 p.m. in the A&M Methodist Church. This annual Day of Prayer service is international, inter denominational, and interracial. The program opened with the prelude, a violin solo played by Mrs. Chris Groneman with Mrs. Ralph Steen as accompanist. Bridge Veterans Wives’ e Club Has High Attendance Seven tables of bridge were formed for the meeting of the Vet erans Wives’ Club, Thursday even ing in the YMCA on the Campus. Serving as hostesses were Mrs. Celestia Loden and Mrs. Jan Ry- man. High score prize was won by Mrs. Nelda Wilson and sec- ond-high by Mrs. Lorraine Ward. The president of the club, Mrs. Barbara Goodson, brought her mother, Mrs. Burleson, ,as a guest. Last Thursday evening Mrs. Jean Tansil and Mrs. Jan Ryman were hostesses for the club meet ing. At this time Mrs. Celestia Loden won a high score of 8540 to break the all-time record score for the club, previously held by Mrs. Lorraine Ward. Mrs. Jan Ryman won second-high prize. The club’s reporter, Mrs. Mary Ann Smith, asks all veterans wives who are interested in bridgq to join the club. She says that although the club is expanding rap idly, there is room for many more. This social club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of every month. Thomas gave the call 4- to worship and Mrs. R. R. Lan caster the devotional reading. Mrs. Dallas Belcher and Mrs. F. I. Dahlberg gave the presentation of projects which are supported by the World Day of Prayer offer ing. These projects include aid to the two-and-one-half million agri cultural migrants, and the more than one million share croppers in the United States; aid to home missions for the Negro; religious training and social centers for the 65,000 Navajo Indians on reserva tions in Arizona and New Mexico ij aid to the 20,000 foreign students studying in the United States, and aid to the eight interdenomination al Christian medical colleges and training schools in the Orient which are helping to prepare their young people for future Christi .n leadership in their homelands. Mrs. Groneman and Mrs. Steen then played for the Offertory after which devotional music was given by the Harmony Choral Club with Mrs. Grace Grug as acompanist. The selections included “Morning Hymn” and “Lord’s Prayer.” Mrs. Steen acompanied the singing. The Rev. James Moudy spoke to the group on “The Lord is Thy Keeper.” A prayer of intercession was then given by Mrs. R. R, Lancaster. The congregation joined in a hymn of dedication and in thfl closing prayer. A.A.U.W. Will Elect Officers The Bryan- College Station Branch of the American Associa tion of University Women will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the small assembly room of the YMCA on the Campus. There will be no regular pro gram as an election of officers is scheduled and plans are to be made for next year’s work. Mrs. Harold Heady, publicity chairman for the association, said that it is hoped that all members will attend as this is to one of the most important meetings of the year. Joyce Has . . .
