Wednesday Afternoon, February 27, 1946 The Battalion Page 3 Ags Split Porker Series; End Cage Season Cadet Cagers Come from Behind to Take One-Point Thriller Monday By Marion “Dook” Pugh Battalion Sports Editor The Texas Aggies and the University of Arkansas closed out the 1946 Southwest Conference basketball sea son here Monday and Tuesday nights with each team tak ing a game. Monday night the Aggies eras ed a 13 point halftime deficit, and came back strong to gain a 56-55 decision. It looked like the Karow boys were out of the picture at the rest period, and the majority of the fans had conceded Arkan sas the victory. But such men as Dawson, Adams, Kirkland, Mace, Vass and Yeoman had different ideas. They started peppering away at the hoop, and with six minutes to go the score stood 51-53, Ar kansas. Then little Don Mace dunked a two pointer for the Aggies to go ahead 53-52 with four minutes left to play. The Aggies’ Mr. Kirk land added two more, and with about two minutes to go it looked as if the Aggies were in like Flynn. With 50 seconds left in the game, Homer Adams was fouled, and the Aggies decided to try the free throw. If they made it, the game was sewed up. Homer came through in great shape, and the Aggies enjoyed a lead of three points with 50 seconds left. Bill Flynt got two points for Arkan sas as the seconds ticked away to end the game. For the Razorbacks, big George Kok led the scoring with 12 points. Jamie Dawson was high point man for the Aggies with 18 SPORTS Aggie Swimmers Beat DAC 46-38 The Aggie swimming team, un der the direction of Coach Art Adamson, won a 46-38 victory over the Dallas Athletic Club team in a dual swimming meet held in Downs Natatorium, on February 23. The 300-yard medley relay was won by the Aggies, with Jimmy Allen, Jimmy Boyle, and Warren Settegast swimming the course in 3:27.7. Moore sped through the 220-yard freestyle event in 2:32.4, with Jack Riley of A. & M. sec ond, and Pat Rose, of D.A.C. third. The Aggies carried away the 100- yard backstroke event, with Allen Self winning in 1:11.2, and Jimmy Allen taking second place. Henry Hey You Aggies! Homer Adams, who played an excellent all-around game was good for 13 points. Don Mace and “Kirk” Kirkland also did fine work for the Aggies. The second game was a differ ent story. Arkansas came back de termined to reverse the outcome. They did 53-45. From the start of the game the Razorbacks were on their way, shooting like they couldn’t miss if they wanted to. A 28-19 lead was theirs at half time. Schumchyk and Flynt led the way for Arkansas with 12 points each. The Aggies had trouble find ing the range—that is, all except Bill Yeoman, who burned the meshes for 22 points. Jamie Daw son was held to 10 points, giving George Kok the Southwest scor ing crown. Dawson was behind Kok 7 points. These two games closed the sea son for the Aggies who played heads-up, hustling ball all year. In the win and lose column, the Aggies didn’t stand too well. They ended up in fifth slot, but the fans can thank the boys for some thrillers, and with a little luck here and there they could have been right up in the running. Six games were lost by the margin of only three or four points. Coach Marty Karow, and all the boys did a swell job, and deserve all the credit in the world.
