FRIDAY AFTERNOON, JULY 14, 1944 THE BATTALION FACE 3 The Lowdown On Campus ‘Distractions By Alfred Jefferson The Campus is bringing another old one back as half of Saturday’s double feature. “Safari” is, how ever, an exciting and interesting picture. Madeleine Carroll does a bang-up job of playing the only woman with a number of men on a trip into the jungles of Africa. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., as the hero, also makes a creditable show ing. This would be good for a single feature, so it holds up the big end of the bill nicely. “Two Man Submarine,” with Ann Sav age and Tom Neal, is fairly good supporting fare. It is better than the average “B” picture. The Lowdown: Together these will make a good way to spend the afternoon. Another picture you may remem ber from your childhood days comes to the Campus Sunday and Monday. It is “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” starring Fred MacMurray, Henry Fonda, and Sil via Sidney. This is generally con ceded to be a good picture, but there are some points that are not so good. It was one of the first technicolor movies made, and it may be a little hard on your eyes. However, the story isn’t bad, and the actors are all good. The Lowdown: Not bad for its age. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Campus “T h e Navy Comes Through,” with Pat O’Brien will be the feature. George Murphy plays the part of an ensign who is cashiered because of an accident which happened while he was the officer in charge of a destroyer gun. He rejoins the navy as an enlisted man, and his adventures on board a merchant ship as a gun crew member are something you won’t want to miss. The Lowdown: This is one of the best war pictures that has been made. For once you will see a realistic picture with a happy end ing. Don’t miss it. Sunday’s offering at Guion will be “Swing Shift Maisie” starring Ann Sothern. Maisie is at her best, and there are plenty of laughs, as you can well imagine. When she goes to work in a de fense plant, it’s obvious what the reaction of her fellow workers is. The Lowdown: A light comedy you will undoubtedly enjoy. It looks as if there are no abso lutely sorry shows being foisted off on us this week. Monday and Tuesday “Thousands Cheer” will be shown at Guion. Gene Kelly, as the private, and Kathryn Grayson as the Colonel’s daughter, really turn out a good performance. The guest stars, Eleanor Powell, Lucille Ball, Mickey Rooney, Frank Mor gan, Ann Sothern, Virginia O’Brien and Kay Kyser and his band are strictly in the groove. Jose Iturbi plays a symphony conductor in his first screen appearance, and his piano is featured. He even beats out a little boogie. Mary Astor and John Boles also deserve credit for their supporting roles. The Lowdown: This is a musical that you won’t forget. It’s worth seeing more than once, especially Kathryn Grayson. Noted in passing Looks like the “Brow” has him self in a fix. The “Brow” got his brow caught. Moral: Never spike anything or you will have trouble in the head the next morning. Now in session It started off with a discussion of the possibilities of the lie de tector (Eve was the first one.) and shortly the conversation worked its way around to econom ic liabilities . . . these weekends sure do flatten the old pocket. Then the subject changed to philosophy. One experienced lad discoursing on the subject of sub jects said that, “To me love is peace, quiet and tranquility.” H. E. queer, “That ain’t love. That’s sleep.” Nonchalant Nonnie She’s a beautiful girl—one good lipstick brings out her lips. One good rouge brings out her cheeks. One good sneeze brings out her teeth. One small diamond brings out the wolf in her. Getting there When weekends roll around a large part of the Aggies throw a toothbrush (Some Aggies do have teeth) and a razor (Even the six teen year old fish are carrying one around for ballast.) into a beat down old bag and head for the open road with high hopes of making it in time to see the bag . . . Check the bag and go out to see the principal item of in terest. Whether she is blonde, brunette, read headed, or bald (Squeeze her to see if her teeth come out.) she isn’t worth violating the Aggie thumbing code for. What if you are a couple of hours or days late? Solace can always be found. You sow lace but I’ll sow oats. How did that get in here? Men, they are a dime a dozen. Tomatoes I mean.
