Quite an interest was shown by the relatively large audience in the speaker’s talk when nearly an hour of discussion followed his conclusion. A trip to Moscow will surprise an American because of prevalent mis taken opinion in America that it is in turmoil and that the conditions are so backward, i its like going back to the middle ages. The Russians are very modest even though the habit of public bathing without bathing suits and the custom of holding one’s girl companion in. the carriage during a pleasnre ride would not make them seem so in the eyes of the Ameircan. The two ailments that held western civilization, chivalry and purity, nev er touched Russia and as a conse quence the business situatin in Rus sia is in a backward state. Anyone without a job, even though no hope of improving the situation is evident, does not think of famine—they have suffered from hunger and strife so much that they actually enjoy it. The famine is existant in Russia at all times but no one notices it until so many become starved that this con dition is represented in the street. The Bolsheviki, only about jfive per cent of which are active in con trolling the government, are just oridnary people, the only difference being in their theory of belief. The most active leader that this party has ever had was Lenin, and, contrary to the American’s concep tion of what a mob leader’s charac teristics should be, he was very emo tionally reserved. His -qualities of speech combined with this ability to speak unemotionally gave to the peo ple his ideas on plans of national development in a way which showed READY ! The Bolsheviki theory is that a small few who own the factories and controlling economic conditions are ruling the remanining vast majority of the populace and their scheme to transfer this control is very desirable. This condition exists in Russia to day, for they have taken control of the factory and government and are operating all for the common good of all people. This is typically shown by their prison system which was investigated by the leader of the government in person with several psychologists, anid those who they thought could be safely let out, were given their freedom. The prisoners receive ordinary union wages for their work in prison and the only difference between their lives and those not in prison is that they are not allowed to run free in the streets Absolute equality of the sexes, both legal and political—is existant in Russia. The people of Russia have an in terest in their nation which predom inates them and their lives. The state regulators are continually work ing for an economic systematized na tion which is the dream of H. G. Wells. The Bolsheviki idea or social the ory is this; since the factory is a systematized business with heads or overseers who are becoming fewer and more concentrated, ^why can/t the factory workers take control. This theory is in fault because it fails to take the farms into' (Consideration, even though the “factory system” is gradually coming into effect here, and about 25 per cent of the land now in cultivation in Russia is under this present system. The idea of respect supplants the idea of dress in Russia and they act outside of their home just as they do inside. Wealth is not exciting to them and they make life more in tense and more interesting by having an interest in life itself instead of earning a living. Their nerves are quiet; they never get in a hurry; and everybody has all the time he wants. The speaker estimated that the American’s time was worth about six times as much as the Russian’s. “They are not lazy—they are only leisurely,” he said. They appreciate life so well that they cannot understand our eagerness to bring it to an end. All Bolsheviki are atheists but they do not attack the religion or the theories of the the religion or the churches evisting throughout the Russian cities.
