COLLEGE OF THE FUTURE. FIRST STATE BANK & TRUST CO. Every fact upon which an opinion may be based warrants the belief that the Agricultural and Mechanical Col lege of Texas, as large and distin guished as the present finds it, is but in its infancy—that it is destined to become by far the greatest institution, from every point of view, of its class, which the country affords. A few years ago the college was glad to congrat ulate itself upon an enrollment of four hundred students, and its name was hardly known by the state at large. In this short period it has developed and expanded until the register now carries a thousand or more names and the college is known and discussed from one border of Texas to the other. The strangest thing about this growth, and one which can not help but add to the optimism of those who love the college, is that it has occurred in the face of obstacles that would seem to have made it impossible. Lacking dormitories to accommodate the influx, the students have had to live in tents, subject to all the discom forts that attend such life. The col lege has been ill able, in many other ways, to meet the conditions imposed upon it, but with the aid and loyalty of the student body, every obstacle has been surmounted and the college con tinues its march of progress. The lethargy and indifference of our leg islators and our people, who had no eyes to recognize our needs, no ears to hear our petitions, was in itself enough to have put a damper upon the spirit and optimism that have made of us what we are. At last, however, it appears that the bread cast upon the waters is returning. TU^.jieopJ# of Texas, and those who represent tnem in legislative halls, appear to have become cognizant of the fact that money is required to build and main tain this institution, and the purse strings of the state are being slowly but surely opened to us. If, with all the difficulties with which the road has been beset, this institution can have attained the rank of the largest college of its kind in the entire United States, there is scarcely a limit to the progress which we may anticipate when the road is made smooth for us. Nor is it solely in increased size that the institution may take pride. Size in itself is but a poor criterion. The standard of excellence has been successively raised in all departments until we may claim an almost equal eminence with the most renowned technical colleges of the country, that had already established their fame when Texas was yet a wilderness. It is reasonable to suppose that a few more years will find us established upon the very pinnacle of excellence. There is another factor which I be lieve assures the Agricultural and Mechanical College a remarkable growth during the years to come. The tendency of the times, and the pres sure of life, are forcing an increas ingly greater number of men to fit themselves for some practical, profes sional work by means of a college education. The Agricultural and Me- chancial College offers the courses best adapted to this end, and at an expense that is a very minimum. Therefore, it is to this institution that the great mass of the people of Texas will look for the training of their sons for lives of useful endeavor, and I be lieve the time will come when the University will be regarded as a branch of the Agricultural and Me* chanical rather than Agricultural and Mechanical as an appendage of the University.
