“There has been a lot of push from high
school counselors to get students to apply,”
Ashley said. “Aggie Updates helped.”
Aggie Updates is a program among
A&M and high school counselors that
informs prospective freshmen about the
admission requirements and deadlines.
Recruiters from A&M visit high schools to
convey the message that A&M welcomes
all students, Ashley said.
“We made 13 trips. I personally made
eight,” Ashley said. “I made a plea to
minority students, saying, ‘Don't let any
one tell you you can’t make it at A&M.’ I
think the message got out there.”
Ashley said he encouraged many minori
ty students to actively visit the campus rather
than listen to comments about A&M.
“I invited a lot of kids to come and see
what A&M really is. I believe more will want
to come if they visit A&M.” Ashlev said.
The admissions office will make admit
tance decisions this week and early next
week. The number of prospective Freshman
is capped at 6,500, but A&M will offer
admission to 10,800 prospective freshmen.
“We have predicted that about 59 per
cent (of those offered admission) will
accept,” Ashley said.
