Part-time income The Army Reserve Alternate Training Program is a smart way to pay for college. First, if you qualify, the Montgomery GI Bill can provide you with up to $6,920 for current college expenses or approved vo/tech training. Second, if you have—or obtain—a qualified student loan not in default, you may get it paid off at the rate of 15% per year or $500, whichever is greater, up to a maximum of $10,000. Selected military skills can double that maximum. Third, you can earn part-time money in college, and here’s how it works: One summer you take Basic Training, and the next summer you receive skill training at an Army school. You’ll earn over $1,500 for Basic and even more for skill training. Then you’ll attend monthly meetings at an Army Reserve unit near your college, usually one weekend a month plus two weeks a year. You’ll be paid over $105 a weekend to start. It’s worth thinking about. Give us a call: (409) 764-0418 BE ALL YOU CAN BE? ARMY RESERVE NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Kirk McCaskill picked up his first victory of the spring, allow ing three hits over two in nings as the Chicago White Sox edged the Texas Rangers 4-3 Thursday. McCaskill hadn’t pitched since March 20 when he gave up two runs and four hits in four innings against New York. But he allowed only an unearned run in the first against Texas for his first victory in five appearances. The White Sox, who now have won eight of their last 10, took the lead for good with two runs in the second when Lyle Mouton scored on Darren Lewis’ grounder to short and Chris Snopek scored on Chad Kreuter’s grounder to short. Chicago led 4-1 when Norber to Martin scored on a wild pitek by loser Darren Oliver in the third. Snopek then drove in Mouton with a single as Oliver gave up four runs three walks in four in nings. Damon Buford the lead to 4-2 witha RBI single in the sixth, and the Rangers threatened in the ninth when Buford startei the inning with a double off the left-field wall. He scoredon Craig Worthington’s single. But Luis Ortiz flied outto center and Rich got Kurt Si well to ground out to third his first save. (AP) — Rick Ley was fired today as coach of the Vancouver Canucks, with general manag er Pat Quinn taking over be hind the bench for the rest of the season. “As of this morn ing I’m the coach of the hockey team,” Quinn told a news conference. The move came the morning after another disastrous performance at GM Place when the Canucks lost 6-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite one of the NHL’s highest payrolls, the Canucks have a record of 29-32-15. Their home record is 13-18- 7 and they are tied for sixth and seventh in the Western Conference, just one point ahead of eighth-place Toronto. Ley, 47, served three years as the Canucks assistant coach before becoming the team’s 12th head coach. Quinn made the same move in early 1991, firing coach Bob McCammon and coaching the team for the next 3 1/2 seasons. His coaching stint culmi nated in the team’s memo rable 1994 run for the Stanley Cup when they lost in seven games to the New York Rangers. Ley, who was named head coach in August 1994, was® der constant pressure from the beginning of the season the Canucks struggled despite a highly paid lineup. Stan Smyl and Glen Hanlon w remain as assistant coaches. “Hopefully Rick Ley will stay wii our organization i we go forward Quinn said. Ley, who rarely shows emo tion behind the bench, has been pilloried most of the son by local sports reporters for apparently being unablete motivate the Canucks. Ley retired as a playerii 1981 after 13 seasons in tkt NHL and WHA, with tk Toronto Maple Leafs a Hartford, including six Whalers captain.
