By Heather Pace The Battalion Schools under fire for overspending on buyouts HOUSTON (AP) — Officials with Texas Southern University and the University of Houston are in Austin this week explaining to law makers why taxpayers funded the contract buyouts. Regents voted in 1995 to award almost $812,000 to four former top- level administrators. Texas Southern University spent more than $500,000 to buy out the contracts of two for mer presidents in a two-year period. Houston Community College representatives also testified Tues day, defending that institution's 1995 payment of $203,555 to buy out the contract of former Chancel lor Charles A. Green. Texas A&M sororities and Sigma Chi fraternity will “Get Down and Derby” in the 20th annual Sigma Chi Derby Days that began Wednesday. Derby Days benefits the Chil dren’s Miracle Network, Brazos Valley Food Bank and other philanthropies. Besides helping the commu nity, Derby Days is an event that brings all A&M sororities together. Carolyn McCrary, an Alpha Phi sorority member and fresh man general studies major, said Derby Days allows Greeks to raise money for various charities while providing a bonding expe rience. “We’re all having so much fun while raising money through the different fund raisers,” McCrary said. Brad Harmon, a Sigma Chi member and freshman industri al engineering major, said he is excited about interacting with the sororities. “It is a good way to meet peo ple from all different back grounds,” Harmon said. Derby Days competitions in clude games, skits and canned- food drives. Sororities accumulate points, striving to be named Derby Days Champion. Each sorority has four Sigma Chi “coaches” who ensure sorori ties stay motivated to partic ipate in activities such as soft- ball games and a greased-pole climbing event at Saturday’s Game Day. Skit Night, one of the week’s highlights, allows each sorority to display creativity in unusual ways. McCrary said Alpha Phi won the skit contest two years ago. “We had a ‘Grease’ theme, and all of the queens pulled up in ’50s cars,” McCrary said. “We had the guys doing’5(6 dances in gangster outfits.” Queens, representatives se lected from each sorority, are in terviewed at Thursday night) Queen’s Entrance competition. Past queens have been knom to make their ways to the com petition in hot air balloons ant portable restrooms. Lee Yarbrough, a freshmat bioengineering major, said he enjoys Derby Days because it e a more exciting way to raisi money than holding a typical fund-raiser. “I’m glad to be a pledge dui ing Derby Days because Fi finding out that fund raisinj doesn’t have to be boring,’ Yarbrough said. “I only wish other organiza tions could do something of this type to better the community." ihlvt Itl.VI IT! it: jve \p $ 99 Ci fit tuxedos 'COMPLETE WEDDING GOWNS, BRIDESMAIDS, FORMALS, PROM DRESSES, AFTER FIVES ALL PRICED TO SELL! 1901 TEXAS AVE.
