Monday • January 22, 1996 Foul food Runes cause complaints □ Corpus Christi spent $85,000 on a study of the smell in the sewer system. CORPUS CHRISTI(AP) — That downtown stench isn’t the sewer system, officials say. For years, downtown busi nesses and visitors have com plained about foul odors and for years the anything but deli cate aroma has been blamed on an old sewer system. But a new study of the city’s downtown water pipes and drainage system shows a differ ent culprit: restaurants. The study shows that the stench emanates from storm sewers where decaying food from 35 downtown restaurants has accumulated over the years. The biggest problem with the sewer system is that it tends to get clogged with grease deposits from the eateries, said Carl Crull, an assistant city manager for public works. Grease clogs lead to sewage back ups and can cause un healthy situations. “It’s just like cholesterol clogging up your arteries,” Crull said. Unless rainfall flushes out the storm sewers, the food sits in the pipes and rots, produc ing the offensive odor. The $85,000 study, commis sioned by the city last year, was conducted to determine the con dition of the downtown infra structure, whether it had the ca pacity to support future develop ment and to identify the cause of the offensive odors. The results of the study will be presented to the City Council Tuesday, along with a recommen dation to approve a $48,000 con tract to design plans and specifi cations for the sewer system re pairs, Crull said.
