Sippial: Experience worthy of new title Continued from Page 1 like the school’s small-town atmosphere. “When I came down for my interviews, I was impressed by the students’ friendliness and the good people here,” he said. “I’m used to big places with my experience in the Air Force and at San Diego State, but it was always the small places I liked. “Smaller places are always on a more personal level.” Sippial said he took the A&M position because of the personal atmosphere. “It was the people who at tracted me here,” he said. “Yes, the job is good, and yes, the money is good. But more im portantly, I’m here because of the people.” More than 198 people an swered the search that began in October 1994. The search was started by a committee of representatives from the Phys ical Plant and its support ar eas, the Faculty Senate, the vice president of student rela tions office and students. The job opening was adver tised in a variety of national and local newsletters, journals and newspapers. Letters were written to some universities asking for nominations. Dr. Robert Duce, search committee chairman, said the pool of candidates was cut down after all the applications were received. “After we sifted through the numerous applications, we shortened the list, looked through resumes and short ened the list even more,” Duce said. “We then called [the can didates for the position] in for interviews.” Dr. Jerry Gaston, interim vice president for finance and administration, made the final decision on the position. Gaston said Sippial’s experi ence and background made him the right choice for the po sition and also led to the change in title, from director to assistant vice president of the Physical Plant. “We are pleased to have at tracted an individual of Chuck Sippial’s experience and exper tise to Texas A&M,” he said in a press release. “The knowl edge he brings to this position — coupled with the critical role that he will play in the overall operation of our cam pus — has led to this new title for the position.” “We feel like over time, offices] will save moneys give [the universities] a lot quick turnarounds in solviJ their problems,” Thompso: said. |j| The offices will save montt I in transportation and otkljec expenses in the long run, ' said. Lindsay said the change represent decentralization which will help the System! agencies and universities. “It will be more serviceori ented toward our Systeif members,” he said. The second new deput] chancellor position, tli deputy chancellor for acaden ic institutions and agencies will supervise the System nine universities and numet ous research agencies like tks Texas Agricultural Extensiotl Service. Thompson said this positioi| has not been filled, butheej pects to make a decision in tlif| next two to three weeks. “It’s kind of a combination] of academic affairs and what call a development person,”lis| said. “Like Lindsay, he will re port to me.” In another part of the reor ganization, Tami Sayko, assis tant general counsel in the A&M System Office of the Gen eral Counsel, has been i counsel to the chancellor. Terri Parker, A&M System director of communications, said Sayko will advise chancellor on legal issues fecting the System as a whole. “The legal office is kind of broken out with specializa tion,” Parker said. “She will be advising Dr. Thompson on all sorts of issues,’ Thompson said this position is simply a new title, as was already on the Systemic gal staff. “It won’t involve any net people,” he said. “When it nl shakes out, there will be thr; or four positions eliminatet About $630,000 will be saved,’ N bel aatc “E rea mei [ight omf s a B. he 1 nee s H :all llete By Li HE MSC TOWN HALL PRESENTS ; wins i MARGARETCHO FRATERNITY RUSH r I the l A<!
