Former A &M All-American achieving lifes’ aspirations By Emily Pappenfus Special to The Battalion PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The hot Florida sun heat down on a stretch of baseball diamonds and batting cages, and on the back of former Texas A&M standout Brian Thomas. “C’mon boys, this isn’t nursery school,” exclaimed Tommy Thompson, the general manager of the Port Charlotte Rangers. “We have a water break later! ’ . His words cut across the prac tice fields of the Texas Rangers’ spring training complex, causing minor leaguers to scramble from the water cooler toward the fields. The Port Charlotte Rangers are one of six teams in the Texas Rangers’ minor league system that were practicing together at spring training. They were also the team that Brian Thomas found a place with during the 1993 baseball season. Thomas, an All-American in 1993, was third in the Southwest Conference with a .383 batting average. Martin Scott, director of player personnel, said the Rangers have great expectations for Thomas this year. “Because of his injury he will start in Port Charlotte, which is single A,” Scott said. “But there is an outside chance that he will make it to AA,” “With his experi ence in college, and hitting .290 last year, he’s the type of guy that can move up fast in the ranks.” Thomas seemed just as confi dent about the approaching sea son. "At the end of this year I defi nitely hope to end up in AA," he said. "If I go in and play well I’ll have a chance to go up there at the end of this year and hopefully by next year for sure.” In fact. Thomas said this expe rience is like a dream come true for him. “I’ve been playing ball since I was four.” Thomas said. "I al ways grew up watching baseball on TV. The College World Series was a dream and last year thai dream came true.
