For years priests warned about it, doomsdayers predict ed it and the masses feared it. But in 1993, the apocalypse finally arrived — Beavis and Butt-head released their own album, "The Beavis and Butt- head Experience." Of course, this new release featuring the two MTV cartoon characters who spew their ow stunted, juvenile vernacular, can hardly be called the end of the world. In fact it will probably called the beg ning of some great new music. Mega rock, rap and metal groups all contributed previously unreleased tracks for the album and in Beavis and Butt- head's own words, "They don't even suck." Nirvana kicks it off with a wonderfully depressing "I Hate Myself and Want To Die." As always, bassist Chris Novoselic and drummer David Grohl lay a raucous founda tion for Kurt Cobain's screeching vocals. Spaghetti Incident,' pass the Pepto please By Joe Leih The Battalion "The Spaghetti Incident?" Guns N' Roses Rock Geffen Album courtesty of CD Warehouse Guns N' Roses has always been a rather strange breed of a band. They strive for the punk ideal by starting-riots and fighting with fans, but they forgo rough, harsh punk music for glitzy, Hollywood glam rock-n-roll. The group, however, has ended this trend on their latest release, "The Spaghetti Incident?" Paying tribute to bands ranging from the Sex Pistols to the New York Dolls, the members devote most of the album to classic punk tunes. And while the effort is there, the energy unfortunately is not. The group lacks emotion, life and above all punk rock's main attribute — sheer angry force. On the both the Damned's "New Rose" and Fear's "I Don't Care About You," bassist Duff McKagan and guitarist Slash sadly lack the vig orous punk style. Their clean, metal lic guitars don't deliver the distorted feedback aggressiveness and they surely don't drive the music like they should. Even vocalist Axl Rose seems to lack the pure punk energy. It sounds like he is faking it and, in fact, he is. On the UK Subs' "Down on the Farm" he delivers a seriously pseu do-English accent. Maybe Rose was trying to be accurate, but he ain't foolin' anybody. Still, when Guns N' Roses climbs out of the punk tradition, they do a fairly good job. In fact, they do their best on Nazareth's classic rock tune "Hair of the Dog." Drummer Matt Scrum's straight stick play. Slash's bluesy chords and Rose's nasal, high-pitched wail all Guns N' Roses unsuccessfully screech their way through classic punk cuts. groove the song along pretty darn well. Hopefully that will clue Guns N' Roses into sticking with what they do best — acting punk but not play ing any. A Tradition Worth Sharing “The Nutcracker” Th e magic of “The Nutcracker” has captured the imaginations of countless generations. Now, this memorable tale will be brought to life with a new energy and technical brilliance only the world-renowned Moscow Classical Ballet can provide. From the beginning of the Stahlbaum Christmas party, to the duel between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King, you'll see why “The Nutcracker” remains a holiday favorite. “Flawless” Globo-Brazil .. Page The Red Hot Chili Peppers soon follow in cl-core vein with their version of the ages' "Search and Destroy." With assic muddied instruments and lyrics, the Chili Peppers prove they know punk as well as funk. Even the godfathers of hip- hop, RUN-DMC, lay down a track for the release. Using their classic scratching/echo effects as well as some new funky/reggae rhythms, the trio delivers a solid get-down- and-boogie tune. But naturally the gems of the album are Beavis and Butt- head's running commentary between the songs. Their dis cussions, ranging from the "cool ness" of the groups to the dire need for things to "suck," warrant a bit of laughter, they even have flashbacks to jive-talking with RUN-DMC and mastur bating in Anthrax's tour bus that truly bring forth the guffaws. The duo even eventually joins Cher on her classic, "I Got You Babe." Spouting air guitar, occasional vocals and many, many hilarious comments, Beavis and Butt-head for ever change the image of the tune. No doubt about it, this album not only has great music, but it is darn funny too. ( NOBODY KNOWS LIKE DOMINO'S How You Like Pizza At Home. s •ft SATURDAY DECEMBER 4 6:00 U. OF PORTLAND VS.
