Listening to Nolan See Clay/Page 9 A&M spikers face Lamar after taking second place in Fresno tournament By Jesus Ortiz The Battalion After capturing second place in the Dan Gamel Invitational in Fresno, Calif., the Lady Aggie volleyball team will head to Beaumont tonight to take on the Lamar Cardinals. Although the Lady Aggies said the Lamar team will be the under dogs, they, and their fans, are expect ed to come out fired up. "We expect a packed house be cause everyone wants to beat A&M," sophomore setter Suzy Wente said. Head coach Laurie Cor belli agreed, but said she sees the match up in a different perspective. "They have nothing to lose," she said. "But we will be fired up, as well." The Aggies got their season off to a rough start when they lost their ini tial game of the invitational to San Jose State in five sets. But unlike last y'ear, the Aggies turned the tables and won three straight games to capture the second- place trophy. "We took that game and we learned from it," Senior outside hit ter Sheila Morgan said. "In years past we probably w'ould have curled up," Morgan was one of the keys to the Lady Aggies determination and per severance. In the second game of the tourna ment she set a career high of nine kills out of 14 attempts. Most of those kills came off of sets by Wente. "All 1 had to do was get it up there, and she hit it," Wente said. "She is pretty' much unstoppable. She is hitting awesome." Corbelli said she thought Jvlqrgar^ was the most pow'erful hitter the tournament. "She is very hard to stop," she said. Morgan continued to dominate with a career mark of 27 kills as the team went on to beat Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the following match. Wente also joined the record books at the expense of Cal Poly. Her 63 assists were the ninth highest game assist total in A&M history. "She's like the quarterback," Mor gan said of her setter. "She just amazes me. She's just really' good," Corbelli was also pleased with the performance of her sophomore from San Antonio. "Suzy Wente is a great competitor whth great mental stamina who can carry out the game plan to a tee," Corbelli said. Morgan and Wente along with the rest of the Lady Aggies finished the tournament with a win over host Fresno State in four games. Wente, who broke her career high with 4 kills against Fresno State and 98 assists in the entire tournament, was chosen for the all-tournament team. Morgan led the team in kills in all four games and had career marks with 13 digs against San Jose and four solo blocks against Cal State Fullerton. With 76 kills, Morgan had the sec ond highest for the tournament and was honored on the all-tournament squad. Corbelli said she was especially pleased with the Lady Aggies' confi dence. "The most significant thing was the players confidence in their team," she said. "They knew they could come back. They realize they can make things happen, instead of "flyings happening to them." Kyle Bumett/THE Battalion A&M senior outside hitter Sheila Morgan sets a ball in practice Monday in preparation for the team's match at Lamar Tuesday. Morgartwas'named, alongMWi A&M sophomore set ter Suzy Wente, to this past weekend's alKYournament team hostfed by Fresno University.
