Campus Page 2 The Battalion Wednesday, August 25,1993 Freshman Orientation Week '93 Incoming cadets learn about life in the Corps By Jennifer Smith The Battalion Freshmen entering the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets this fall are learning this week what it's like to be an Aggie in the Corps. Freshmen Orientation Week (FOW), which began Aug. 22 and ends Aug. 28, helps new cadets adjust to the Corps as well as to the University. Marc Bertamini, Corps adju tant, said freshmen orientation week prepares freshmen for life in the Corps and for life at A&M. Bertamini said freshmen in the Corps are much better prepared than the average student after they complete orientation week. "We take great pains to make sure they succeed/' Bertamini said. "They have a lot more to deal with than the average fresh man." Deputy Corps Commander Mando Avila agreed that orienta tion week gives cadets a better chance for success. "Freshmen Orientation Week lets the freshmen get a feel for the University," Avila said. "They get a taste of what the Corps and campus is all about." He said FOW is also helpful for the cadets because they get to know their commanders. More than 750 new cadets are participating in Freshmen Orien tation Week, including 40 women and 90 African-American and His panic students. Freshmen are assigned to their outfits and rooms and are given hair cuts and a physical during FOW. They are also shown where all of their classrooms are located before classes begin Monday. "We basically teach them how to be in the Corps," Bertamini said. Other than procedural tasks, the freshmen will also participate in 'P.T,' or physical training every morning. This consists of exercises and long jogs around the University. Bertamini said the freshman band, which consists of about 131 cadets, will also practice this week. freshmen about different facets of student life, including acade mics, the Aggie Code of Honor, traditions and extracurricular ac tivities. Bertamini said the freshmen will also be shown how to march in formation. Their first official review will be Saturday. Fish Review, which is held at Simpson Drill Field at 1:30 p.m., concludes Freshmen Orientation Week. The new cadets will march from the Quadrangle to the drill field at 1 p.m. "A lot of the stuff during Fresh men Orientation Week is just pro cedural and paperwork," Bertami ni said. "Fish Review is a little re ward for them after a hard week. "It's basically a transition from being a student to being a member of the Corps," Bertamini said. Bertamini will turn the new cadets over to the Corps Com mander during the Fish Review ceremonies. Each cadet will take an oath of office and become an official member of the Corps. Avila said FOW is not manda tory, but almost all of the fresh men cadets attend. Many speakers will talk to the Amy Browmng/THE Battmiox Challenger 17 fish line up to "whip out" to a senior ping out" is a procedure whereby underclassmen cadet during Freshman Orientation Week.
