Fight for Baylor control heads meeting agenda WACO (AP) — Moderate Texas Baptists fought off a last- minute attempt by fundamental ists Monday to return Baylor Uni versity to total control of the Bap tist General Convention of Texas. Delegates at the convention's 106th annual meeting defeated the substitute measure by a vote of 5,976 to 4,714. The alternate proposal would have nullified a proposed agree ment that returns most of Baylor's governance to school officials. The move clears the way for a vote on the original agreement, which allows the BGCT to elect only 25 percent of the school's newly-created board of regents. Delegates were expected to vote again later Monday. A record number of more than 10,600 convention delegates, called messengers, packed Ferrell Special Events Center on the Bay lor Campus to decide the crucial issue. If the plan is rejected, the school will continue with the plan without the convention's ap proval. The substitute measure was of fered by a Houston minister who called the agreement to reduce Texas Baptists role in Baylor's af fairs a "dangerous precedent." The move from the Rev. Ed Young called for evangelist Billy Graham to oversee an arbitration team to restore Baylor's ties to the BGCT. "I am in a difficult place," Young said. "We need all of Bay lor University in the Baptist camp." For 146 years, the convention has selected every member serv ing on the governing board. Young's motion called for an effort to force Baylor to return to it's original charter by rejecting the proposed agreement. It also called for an arbitration team to look into ways to restore the school's board of trustees and dismiss the newly-created board of rejects. Young proposes that the arbitrators be hand-picked by Graham. Supreme Court refuses to grant stay of execution HUNTSVILLE (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a last-day appeal Monday for a former construction worlcer who faced death early Tuesday for the 1976 slaying of a Montgomery County probation officer. G.W. Green, 54, was scheduled for lethal injection just after midnight for the shooting death of John Denson during a robbery at Denson's home. Green, whose full beard, dark glasses and raspy voice made him appear like a hippie from the 1960s, is among the longest- serving of the 349 inmates on the Texas death row, the nation's largest. After federal appeals courts and state courts rejected Green's requests for a stay, he appealed to the Supreme Court on Mon day. But the Supreme Court also refused to block his execution. The Monday afternoon vote was 7-2, with Justices Harry Blackmon and John Paul Stevens dissenting. "We all are bom, we all live a while, and we all die," Green, who has refused to speak with reporters in recent weeks, said in an earlier interview. "I never thought I was going to live forever. I have no apologies, no mercy to ask. "When it comes time to go to the table. I'm going to roll up my sleeve and say: 'Get it right' If they keep me here till I'm 70 and then snuff me. I'm going to be the oldest hippie. I don't think I'll blast off for Jesus. I'll never tell someone I'm sorry for some thing I didn't commit." Attorneys for Green contended his trial jury wasn't able to consider all the evidence in the case and was not allowed to con sider the fact he was not the triggerman in the Denson killing. They also argued his legal help at trial was ineffective. The triggerman in the slaying, Joseph Starvaggi, was execut ed Sept. 10, 1987. A third man involved in the case, Glen Earl Martin, received a life prison term and remains jailed. Low oil consumption will aid U.S. producers, professor says Continued from Page 2 Wu said. Americans began using more and more gas. "We use gas like we have all the gas available," Wu said. "We don't." By keeping consumption low, oil producers would produce a greater percentage of the nation's supply, Wu said. At the same time, improved oil recovery tech niques such as infill drilling would increase the supply of do mestic oil. Domestic oil prices would be higher than current oil prices, Wu said. However, these prices would be much more stable, not likely to change as often. "If it's (gasoline) cheap, people buy more, Wu said, "if it's ex- ensive, people use less. If we uy less(gasoline), domestic pro duction alone may be enough to meet the needs, so we won't have to rely on imports." Currently, oil consumption in creases at a rate of two percent each year. "At that rate, there's no hope for us to produce enough oil to supply that demand," Wu said. "Foreign oil imports will be larger, and larger and larger." Mission helps community by providing meals for free Continued from Page 2 Clothing donations received at the mission are separated and de livered to the resale shops by the men staying there. Many things donated to the mission are not sold, but are given to needy community memoers, Kehrberg says. Another way that the mission helps the community is by supply ing more than 4,000 meals a month, including the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas din ners. In addition, each year Twin City Mission sponsors a Christmas party for the children from the less affluent parts of Bryan. Kehrberg says that new toys, still in their wrappings, are preferable to old toys, but that any donation will be gratefully received. The Twin City Mission was es tablished in the 1940s, and has a full-time staff of about 30 people. Visitors are always welcome at the mission, Kehrberg says. Any one who wants to know more about Twin City Mission may take a tour of the mission at 500 N. Main Drive in Bryan, or pick up some brochures there. /T ULCERATIVE COLITIS If you've been diagnosed with proctitis, colitis, or left sided inflammatory bowel disease, VIP Research is seeking partici pants for a one month research study.
