Sports Editor Another record for Hill to set T he mileage markers are getting smaller, but it's still a long road ahead. The destination is clear, but the gatekeeper is tough to get by. Enter A&M running back Greg Hill — headed down a path traveled only by former Florida running back Emmitt Smith. Now of the Dallas Cowboys, Smith reached the 1000-yard plateau in his seventh game as a collegiate runner for the Gators. It's the shortest length of time any player has run for that many yards in college football history. In five games. Hill has accumulat ed 631 yards, leaving only 369 yards to be had. To put his name next to Smith's in college record books. Hill would have to rush for 185 yards in each of his next two games. Don't laugh. Hill ran for 212 yards in his first game as a college player when the Ag gies played Louisiana State University this season. And A&M's nest two op ponents, Houston and Rice, have de fenses that, at best, are equivalent to . LSU's. A&M head coach R.C. Slocum is not known as one who puts a high price on records or statistics. Slocum's reasoning is that it's not worth risking an injury just to go for a record. Maybe so, but wouldn't it be fun to see Hill break the record? Wouldn't it be fun to see Hill get another record? Wouldn't the offense rally around an accomplishment like that? It's just a thought. Movin' on up . . .No. 13 A&M jumps six spots following win over Baylor From Staff and Wire Reports Texas A&M shot from No. 19 to No. 13 in this week's Associated Press Top 25 Poll. The Aggies were one of three Southwest Conference teams in the poll. Baylor fell to No. 22, and the Arkansas Razorbacks snuck in at No. 25. A&M's 34-12 trouncing of the Bears, previously ranked No. 16, last Saturday led to the im proved status. Arkansas's 14- 13 over the University of Texas im proved its record to 5-2 and 4-0 in the SWC. The Ag gies are 4-1 and 2-0 in the conference, while Baylor slips to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in SWC play following two consecutive losses. Texas Christian University also re ceived votes this week but didn't make the top 25 standing. The Horned Frogs are 5-1 this season, 2-1 in the conference. This week is the first week since Sept. 16 that the conference has three teams in the AP Poll. A&M's loss to Tulsa and Houston's loss to the University of Illi nois on Sept. 21 left only Baylor in the poll after that week. The Aggies host the Cougars this Sat urday at Kyle Field. Arkansas is idle and TCU travels to Waco for a contest against the Bears. A&M plays four of its next six games at Kyle Field. Arkansas hosts Baylor on Nov. 2, then plays at Texas Tech and at A&M before finishing the season in Little Rock against Rice. KARL STOLLEIS/ The Battalion A&M quarterback Bucky Richardson bolsters the No. 1 signal above his head during the Aggies' game against Baylor Saturday. The win improves A&M"s national ranking from No. 19 to No. 13. Bills, Kelly roll over hapless Bengals, 35-16 ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - The mild concussion Jim Kelly sus tained last week seemed to bother him Monday night — for awhile. What had been bothering the win less Cincinnati Bengals all season did them in for 60 minutes in a 35-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Kelly looked confused in throwing three first-quarter in terceptions, but things cleared in time for the NFL's top-rat ed passer to complete 18 of 27 for 392 yards and five touchdowns. Kelly threw the interceptions on Buffalo's first three possessions, but the Bengals were only able to convert the first into points, Jim Breech's 32- yard field goal. The Bills improved to 7-1 going into their bye week. At 0-7, Cincinnati is off to its worst start since 1978. As the losses have piled up for the Bengals so has the frustration and it spilled onto the field Monday night, including a penalty against coach Sam Wyche for running onto the field argu ing an official's non-call on a Buffalo touchdown. Buffalo's first three touchdowns came on passes directed at rookie cor- nerback Richard Fain, who was mak ing his first start in place of Lewis Billups, the veteran who dislocated a finger Friday night and didn't make the trip to Buffalo. Two went to James Lofton, who finished with a career-high 220 yards on eight catches, while the other went to Pete Metzelaars on just his second catch of the season. After Breech gave the Bengals a 3-0 lead following Rickey Dixon's inter ception of Kelly, Cincinnati got the ball back immediately when Kelly was picked off by Leo Barker, who re turned the ball 29 yards to the Buffalo 27.
