Spanos probably won’t want to face her again either. Andaya struck her out three times, adding to 12 strikeouts in five innings. “It was really weird playing against her,” Andaya said. “I talked to her on the phone last week. We made a bargain. She said, ‘give me one hit and I’ll strike out the other times.’ I changed my mind though.” First baseman Mary Schwind hit her third homerun of the season in the second innning. The second game was also peaches and cream for the Ags. A&M walked over South Florida 3-0. Freshman Karen Athanacio started and picked up her fifth win. Andaya picked up her first save. Cooper had a homerun to begin her climb out of her batting hole. Mizera hit her 11th homerun of the year and was robbed of a hom erun by the South Florida cen- terfielder in the sixth inning. “That one felt good,” Mizera said. “I thought the one that didn’t go over was hit better than the one that did though.” The third game could be com pared to the weather. Friday night the rain began to fall, at the same time Southwest Missouri State’s hits began to fall as did the Ags’ unde feated tourney record. Yvette Lopez just couldn’t get any rhythm in four innings and Andaya was called on for the third straight time. Andaya couldn’t save this game, it was already lost 5-3. “It was an off night for every thing,” Lopez said. “I didn’t even have a fastball.” The Ags rebounded on Saturday with a 5-0 win over New Mexico, a 7- 1 win over Stanford and a 9-0 win over Lousiana Tech. Sunday the Ags didn’t stop. A 16- hit performance keved a 8-0 win over Baylor in which Andaya gave A&M’s Liz Mizera up one hit — a single to the leadoff hitter. And in the game before the Utah State game, the Ags used Mizera’s first inning two-run homer for a 2-1 win over Florida State. A game in which Lopez found herself again. “I felt a lot better today,” Lopez said. “Fve had a rough time.” Aggies spin old records in Houston Nix's lady tracksters shatter A8cM marks By CINDY GAY Sports Writer This is a recording — Texas A&M’s women tracksters compiled a stack of personal-records this week end. The Rice Bayou Classic proved A&M’s runners can turn up their speed again and again, like the nee dle on a record player than churns out a familiar song at a faster clip. After three successive record- breaking track meets, not even A&M Coach Bill Nix can predict his run ners’ potential bests. “We had good results,” Nix said. “As we keep progressing, we’re going to place higher.” The Aggies wound up placing 10th out of 13 schools entered in the classic. Winning first were the Hous ton Cougars, who should now con sider 13 their lucky number. But for Esther Dedrick and Debo rah Noel, something more than luck was chasing their heels as the stop watches punched down on the third and fourth fastest 3,000-meters in A&M history. A fifth place finish in 9 minutes, 48.8 seconds, awarded Dedrick a personal record by 20 sec onds, while Noel chopped 11 sec onds off her best time, crossing the line in 9:54.8. Besides long distance, what else is so nice for the price? Sprinter Judith Williams an swered that puzzler in the trial heat of the 200-meters with her fastest time of 24.34 seconds, the No. 2 time in the Aggie record books. Williams also clocked 55.49 in the 400-meter dash trials. But a wet, chilly Saturday signaled Nix to keep Williams from running in the finals. “I’m very excited about what’s going on right now,” Nix said. “If we want to compare ourselves with some of the other teams, we don’t look very good.” However, Nix believes the lady tracksters are on their way to some individual Southwest Conference victories.
