Fean PUF backed by UT regents -The If bcedl nd suj Tex; alls a: United Press International AUSTIN — Three new mem bers of the University of Texas Board of Regents, testifying be fore a Senate subcommittee to day, were reluctant to commit themselves to spreading the rich fund that UT and Texas A&M share to other Texas colleges and universities. “I would want to see the figures on what the schools would receive and how it would be used before I would commit myself to dividing the (Permanent University) Fund, former Texas first lady Janey Briscoe, just appointed to the board by Gov. Bill Clements, ieCon Is Coming told the Nominations Subcommit tee. “I truly have an open mind.” Beryl Buckley Milburn com plained that she has been quoted incorrectly as favoring extension of the fund to all public colleges and universities in the state. “It probably should be ex panded to include component ele ments of the system (UT and A&M systems),” she said, “and not ex tended to other institutions out side the system.” The third new regent, Tom B. Rhodes of Dallas, said he does “not much feel there would be enough money in that fund for use outside the system.” The new regents all agreed that the University of Texas and Texas A&M, at least, should be “institu tions of excellence” and that they are not yet. The new regents, all appointed by Gov. Clements, were asked what areas of waste they have seen in the University of Texas system that might be cut out. Clements has asked for cuts in spending and employment in all state govern ment and in public higher educa tion. “I certainly have not (seen waste), with the possible excep tion of trying to curb to some ex tent building programs,” Rhodes said. “There may not be enough money to sponsor these dual role type buildings. The two bought a $45,000 certi ficate of deposit on Aug. 25, 1976, and paid for it with a check for 562,500 pesos drawn on Banco Nacional de Mexico.
