Joy of running helps defeat depression United Press International ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Marathoners may be helping to cure depression by their long-distance running, a University of New Mexico neurology professor reports. Otto Appenzeller, a long distance runner for nine years and professor at UNM medical school, has been studying changes in levels of certain hormones in marathoners. “We found a tremendous increase in the presence of a group of hor mones released by the sympathetic nervous system,” said Appenzeller after taking blood samples of run ners during a marathon race. “Hormonal levels of 600 percent above normal were recorded in all participants, including the winner and people who took twice as long to complete the race,” he said. “These hormones are known to be low in patients suffering from depression.” According to another study Ap penzeller did measuring the con duction speed of electrical impulses in the brains of runners and non runners, “runners conduction rates were even faster after an 18-mile run and the improved rate con tinued for up to 2 1 A hours.” “This suggests that runners can think faster than non-runners,” Ap penzeller said.
