CLASSIFIED ADS! Call 845-2611 By DAVID WALKER Battalion Sports Writer I have three topics and only one column, so here we go with Aggie basketball, the Liberty Bowl and Woody Hayes. Talk about the good, the bad and the ugly. First for the ugly. Woody Hayes. For the life of me I can’t see why a coach should be allowed to act the way he acted after the Rose Bowl. Working with the press is a major part of a football coach’s job, and if he can’t handle it he should get out. I was glad to see that the Ohio State student newspaper gave Mr. Hayes a . slap on the hand for his childish ac tions. Granted his team had just lost the national championship, but that in no way gives him the right to decide if the press can ask him questions. Mr. Hayes can take a lesson from our own Emory Bellard who re ceived much praise for the way he faced up to the press after his team lost their shot at the same “national championship.” Of course Hayes had already been elected Coach of the Year by the football writers, so I guess he felt as though he had no thing to lose. He did though. He lost a little more respect around the country, and with each tantrum he’s going to lose a little more until just having a winning record isn’t going to be enough. Someday he’s going to have to grow up. Now for the bad, the Liberty Bowl. Not much to say here. It is mostly just a bad memory now. It is next to impossible for a team to get up for a game that means no thing after it has gone undefeated all season with the conference cham pionship and the national cham pionship just one step away only to lose it all. Not only A&M but the SWC has a ‘‘Cotton Bowl or nothing” attitude. This really hurt the Aggies in that they lost their chance at the Cotton on the latest possible day. Getting ready for a Bowl other than the Cot ton was a task that the Aggies couldn’t handle, and I can’t say that I fault them for that. Now finally for the good. I’ve spent my holiday going all over the country watching the Aggie basket ball team go from a “we’re going to have to wait to see what we’ve got” type team to a “we know what we’ve LB. The month-long road trip started off on a sour note when the Aggies lost to a fine LaSalle team by two points in a game in which the Ags could only hit 37 per cent of their shots from the field. They came back the next night to whip Yale 71-62 to take third place in the Kansas tour nament. But more importantly, the Ags got that first road victory under their belts and lots of experience for the freshmen. Next stop on the tournament trail i was Louisville when the Aggies had to come from behind to best Seattle 71-67 in the first round. The Aggies trailed by 11 at the half, but steady scoring by Karl Godine and Sonny Parker and clutch free throws by Barry Davis lifted the Aggies into the finals against national power Louis ville. Most folks around Louisville felt that the A&M-Cardinal game would be a laugher and it was. But the laughing was at the officials. A&M outplayed the mighty Cards all night but were never allowed to go close to their free-throw line. The Cards led by 11, 51-40 at the half. They had made 19 of 23 free throws in the half, while the Aggies had missed on their only attempt. At the game’s end the Aggies had hit 12 of 16 from the line while the Cards had hit 34 of 43. A&M out-field-goaled the Cards, 38-34, and were even with the much taller Redbirds in the rebound col umn. Next stop was Houston where the Aggies opened with nationally ranked San Francisco. The Aggies led throughout the game only to lose it 77-75. The Aggies should have won the game, and no one knows that better than the Aggies themselves who went and took it out on Houston Baptist University Saturday night by a 99-74 count. Sonny Parker was named most valuable player of the tournament after his 39-point performance against Houston Baptist. He was super. Two things really impress me about this Aggie club. They never quit, and they can play with anyone. Aggie basketball has come a long way in the past several years. I can re member when playing a nationally ranked team to two points in past times would have been a moral victory. Losing to San Francisco was not a moral victory. Moral victories are for losers, and this year’s Aggies are not losers. Aeros win Associated Press HOUSTON — The Houston Aeros’ explosive Go-Go line kept going Tuesday night on a three-goal explosion from center Larry Lund. Two of Lund’s three goals in a 7-3 triumph over the Cincinnati Stingers came during a second-period span of 3:45 when the Aeros scored four times to put away the World Hockey Association game. The runaway came as nothing new to Lund. “I don’t know how to explain it,” he said, “but we re playing just like we have the last two years. And there’s nothing that helps a guy play well like scoring a few goals. Andre Hinse brings certain skills to the line and so does Frank Hughes. I con tribute whatever I can.” Elsewhere, the Toronto Toros beat the San Diego Mariners 6-4, the Calgary Cowboys blanked the Win nipeg Jets 5-0, and the Edmonton Oilers broke a nine-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Indianapolis Racers. Cincinnati matched the Aeros goal for goal until Houston started its runaway early in the second period with the score tied at 2-2. Lund started it with his first goal at 6:22 of the period and Mark Howe, Lund and Ted Taylor added goals before the scoring barrage was finished at 10:07. Lund scored his third goal at 18:57 of the final period. The victory also was Houston’s 16th victory in 19 games at the Summit.
