The A&M rugby team opened against the Sam Houston State Uni versity rugby team and won one, lost one and tied one in the three games that were played. The Aggie A-team lost by a score ofll-O. The Aggie B-team won 14-0 and the C-team tied 4-4. In the A contest Hillard Simmons played an outstanding scrum half. He won 17 and lost 10 scrums in a game which saw the Aggies trail 0-7 at the half. Faculty representative Gerard O Donovan said that the Aggie play was good for the first game of the season. “Our passing was outstand ing. John Rayton did a good job at center, directing the traffic among the backs. He was a star for a few years around here, O Donovan said, “when Roger Boos was coach. O’Donovan also praised Tim Fields who played an excellent game as fullback but sat out the sec ond half with shin splints. He was replaced by Bruce Mills. “Everyone on the Aggie team played their best,’ O Donovan ad ded. “I think John Lipscomb has won a place in the front row. He was pushed by second row man Jeff Warren. The Aggie second team won its game 14-0. "On paper and on the field the second team looked better than the first,” O’Donovan said. Alan Jeffrey played his first game after coming to A&M to work on his Ph.D. in the Oceanography De partment. He played fullback and did a good job. Another standout for the Ags was Butch Lewis who won 20 of 25 scrums and scored the opening try for four points. The two point con version failed. show that everyone who goes outl, rugby and stays out will play,If won t stand on the sideline, O Donov an said. Mark Wagner made the second Aggie score after some fancy pas sing. Alan Jeffery made the final conversion after a great run for a try by John Wyble. Unlike the first team the second team won 80 percent of the line outs. The third game ended in a 4-4 tie. “The purpose of that game was to O Donovan added that anyonej terested in going out for ni|j, should contact him or player-raj John Ray ton. The two-day event is being sponsored for the second year in a row by the TAMU-affiliated Brazos Bowmen Field Archery' Club. The Brazos Bowmen club range, and location of the contest, is four miles west of College Station on FM 60. About one hundred archers com peted in the tournament last year, and more are expected for this year’s event, Brazos Bowmen Pres ident Jon Brooke said. Entrants are not required to compete in prelimi nary contests for the championship, and need only be an adult holding a current Texas big-game archery hunting license and using a longbow or compound bow and arrows equipped with hunting broadheads. Competition is, by archery stan dards, highly competitive. Each archer shoots on a fourteen-target course, taking two shots per target. Targets, ranging from likenesses ol deer to replicas of racoons and skunks, are laid out along a winding course among the gullies am!fj which cov er the Bowmen's80a range.
